Yes and no, I open carry all the time. Most weekends you'll find me walking through WA country side with a rifle and a full sized handgun. While I support open carry laws, I see no need to draw attention to myself and turn off people off against guns. Most of those pulling open carry stunts in urban centers are nothing more than attention whores and in many cases (like CA) end up having more moronic guns laws passed.
When I'm in an Urban area I carry concealed. I have on numerous occasions carried an AR15 Pistol in a backpack through Seattle. Mostly because the area of Seattle I was in was sketchy and I would not risk keeping my trunk gun in the car. Yeah, it would be nice to just sling the firearm over the shoulder and walk around Seattle with no one pay the least bit of attention. However, it's SEATTLE. I don't need the heat and I'm one for winning hearts and minds. Turning off people that would be sympathetic to my cause, just to score some brownie points just doesn't do it for me.
My preferred Gun legislation is Constitutional carry where there are in general no prohibitions from carrying openly or concealed and no need for a permit from the government.

Somehow they always think they're the ones who won't be told what to do.
Re: Batboy....
I can see Bats point about not drawing attention but open carry is good because if more people do it the more people will get used to seeing civilians with firearms and none of them shooting anyone.
If someone is having a shit fit because I have a 1911 on my side, then fuck them, it's their sickness to be afraid of an contaminate object on the side of a citizen, but they don't mind it on a cops side. I worked at a range, most gun enthusiast are better at safety and shooting than most cops. it's not my fault most Suburbanites don't know that and when I want to open carry I don't feel I need to bend to the whims of the weakbellied.
I don't do it that much but I do it from time to time, depending on where I am going and by what means. When our car was down and I had to walk down the main drag, which is getting somewhat shitty, I had it on my hip. If you have your head out of your ass it says "Pick someone else." and no one, from the autoparts store clerk to the people at the taco stand said anything or acted afraid of me but at the same time I try to be extra pleasant and polite when in open carry so I don't come off as an asshole who is being an asshole because he has a gun on his side.
Our area is better than most for open carry. There were some problems with cops who were ignorant of the local laws concerning open carry (imagine that, a cop not knowing the law) a few years back that made the news so many here know it's with in the law.

Pistol is different than a rifle/carbine, I don't see the reasoning to have an m4 while eating at a restaurant, we not in Afghanistan. I support concealed carry and open carry, but critical thinking is a must - I trust my training but I don't know you from Adam and you having a loaded rifle 2 feet from my kids will keep me on my toes for the duration unless I feel otherwise.DARTH wrote:I can see Bats point about not drawing attention but open carry is good because if more people do it the more people will get used to seeing civilians with firearms and none of them shooting anyone.

I pretty much agree, I would not walk around the burbs with a carbine, rifle or shotgun either, the caveat to that is if we had another DC sniper type of thing or a disaster. I see the occasional open carry in Houston. Often the dude has cowboy boots, cowboy hat, and a hand tooled belt for his replica .44 cap and ball.
It's like a costume.
The only open carry I saw in Michigan was on a tire changer who worked through Flint, Potiac, and Detroit. He told me he was robbed once, took his van, his tools, his wallet and his coat one winter, and after Thant his employer mandated the carry openly on the job where legal

I would support discussion of stronger gun laws though I would rather see no legislation and continuation of the status quo than the poorly worded crap that comes out of the pens of most legislators who write such bills more for the press than for dealing with any real pressing issue.
Though I find the open carry push to be odd, I have no problem with the following.

Re: Batboy....
"Contaminate object" This is the genius of Darth. It's clearly not the word he intended. It's not a word at all but it should be. It perfectly describes the possession of any object that causes visceral fear or revulsion by someone who despises a given object and wants it regulated or, preferably, banned. Guns...porn...knives...pit bulls...sugar...junk food...ass crack exposing pants...unacceptable art, etc. can all be contaminate objects.Phaedrus wrote:I would support discussion of stronger gun laws though I would rather see no legislation and continuation of the status quo than the poorly worded crap that comes out of the pens of most legislators who write such bills more for the press than for dealing with any real pressing issue.

inanimate object is what I meant.
And what I said is true. Most gun enthusiast do have better skills and safety with firearms than cops. We had the BSO at our range all the time, they are one of the best pig troops on Earth and I used to make beer money challenging them to run the combat range against me, at 18.
I drank a lot of beer (and bought a bit of better) on the BSO's dime, it was maybe 3 who I had to fork over cash to, and they were all gun nuts outside of work.
I am so sick of this perception is reality shit Libs live by. Reality is reality, fact is fact. If a gun on my hip makes you nervous, good, your either someone who had bad intent or your a fucking weak willed cunt, take the cock and shut the fuck up or walk on.

Someone say Safety? You just reminded me of a tangent.
Back before most conceal carry laws were passed, the moronic left argued that concealed carry would result in the streets running red with the blood of citizens. Let ordinary citizens pack heat and there would be OK coral type shoot outs on a daily basis. Ohh the humanity! Then the statistics came rolling in and it was all bad news for the left. Somehow crime when down, not up. Them ordinary unwashed masses, even the dolts in states with no training requirement (WA State), were able to contain themselves and handle their unalienable right to be armed.
Now the new leftist mantra is "I'm for safety" or "People should be required to be trained". All nothing more than back door schemes to restrict gun access, register owners and or firearms. How do we know this? Because that is exactly what happened in England, Australia and not to surprisingly Nazi Germany. All done in the name of "Safety" and the false promise that registration list would never be used to confiscation guns.
Show me a person that supports requiring a government training & licensing program for speech, religion, the press, bearing arms, marriage, sex, artistic expression, property rights, drugs etc in the name of safety; and I'll show you a fascist thug hiding behind a smiley face.

Depends what he means by enthusiast. I wouldn't call most servicemen enthusiasts. The Marine ranges I was on were very much like the big Army ranges I was on which are very much like police training ranges.
