I make a conscious decision to almost only surf intermediate-expert level breaks. A big reason for that is the drastically reduced rate of beginner mistakes—inadvertent drop-ins, people paddling to the shoulder and blocking the wave (instead of into the white wash), and ditching their boards instead of holding on to them when waves are crashing.

La Jolla Shores and Tourmaline are the two best-known beginner breaks in Southern San Diego. One of my last trips to La Jolla Shores, three people cut me off without looking, one slammed into my leg and opened a cut. One of my last trips to Tourmaline, a guy paddled in front of me, then threw his board in my direction when a wave broke just outside of us and the wave carried his board right into my skull. These were both accidental and caused by a lack of skill and a lack of awareness.

But even surfing intermediate+ breaks doesn't prevent it. Last year, at Windansea, I was going on a wave, and a random beginner-intermediate surfer threw his board away instead of holding on to it and it drilled me in the knee. When I told him, he took no responsibility, and blamed me for getting too close.

I've seen a lot of yelling and water splashing at the intermediate+ breaks. But only once did it turn in to anything else. A beginner didn't look and cut off an experienced surfer. That guy's friend confronted the beginner, then held him under water to teach him a lesson. The beginner went ape-shit and started shouting profanity and threatening the guy. At first, I thought, "Awesome!" Because these distractions are great for my wave count. But after a while, I told them both to shut the fuck up, and they did.

I have threatened people in the past myself, and been threatened (I used to be a wave hog with no etiquette and little skill), but it's never turned into anything. I never surf better when I threaten people, but I will occasionally deliberately cut people off for bad etiquette. In this case, I seem to surf quite well.

What's the vibe like at Israeli beaches?

Bram
i am in the middle of replying to your reply and had to shelter twice from incoming missile attacks today. Once in a public shelter and once in this apartment. I can't believe what you have gone through surfing. I also took a surfboard to the face which I started to describe. It's 5:19AM. I have been up all night. I had some very disturbing conversations with people I have known for over 45 years. I have to cut them out of my life. I got very agitated and have too much respect for myself to let this happen again. I am realizing I have a need to help people I have known for decades. A few want my help. Most don't. I have let go of these people before. I have to let go again. The security situation in this country is very disturbing. Iran may have nukes ready to strike us. It is very hard for me to deal with at times.

I hope you get some good waves and avoid the crazy people. I wanted to go surfing today but most probably will be too wiped out. I hope I can ride my carveboard later in the afternoon.
Here is a video about it with Brad Gerlach.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70Ld_j3MYzg

Gerlach came in 2nd in the pro tour in 1991. He could have finished first if it wasn't for this heat with Martin Potter, the former number 1. Who do you think was at fault?

It's a national religious holiday here. A lot of people will be surfing. I'm told that generally the vibe is nice but to be honest I have had to relearn how to surf at least 3 times for various reasons the last twelve years and have only surfed when there are very few people out. I never thought I'd do it again. I am practicing with wave-ki by Gerlach on my padded Feldenkrais table (like a massage table) instead of this stone tile floor. I am getting better at it. I think Gerlach has some great information, at least for me.

I love this movie. You should too.

Lenny,

Just watched the video on the Carveboard, seems like a great tool for surfing/snowboarding training. Stay safe! I'm so glad you're able to exercise and play amidst the craziness of the war that's thrust upon you. Hope you have good people around you to share the mental burden and maybe to go surf and Carveboard with.

Will check out the other videos later...off to work!

For the Gerlach vs. Potter contest...I can't tell who was at fault. But Potter got way better waves and surfed them well. Maybe Gerlach was pissed because he was on the wrong waves? Maybe Potter was talking shit and pissed Gerlach off?

Haha, of course I love Point Break! That's part of the reason my profile pic is Bodhi from that movie. The main reason is someone here was talking shit that I'm probably like Bodhi—though he's way cooler than me.

Did you surf on the national religious holiday?

Stay safe and stay connected to the ocean!

I didn't go on the national religious holiday. I haven't been sleeping well. There have been a few times I was up all night.

Bram this was written a few days ago.

i am in the middle of replying to your reply. I had to shelter twice from incoming missile attacks today. Once in a public shelter and once in this apartment. I can't believe what you have gone through surfing. I also took a surfboard to the face which I started to describe. I had three absolutely dreadful conversations the last 8 hours - one on the phone to a guy in Israel and one in palo alto over face time. i've known them for over 45 years each. It's now 4:19 AM and I haven't been able to sleep. I refuse to subject myself to them again. One guy aged 65 had a heart attack on the highway refuses to wear a heart rate monitor while hiking with a pack on even though the doctors gave him a maximal heart rate. he said if it's God's will he dies he will die. I wrote a long letter to him and sent a copy to his wife that he should consider the stress he will cause his wife of over 40 years, his five daughters, his grandchildren and future generations by being so irresponsible and that he should consult his rabbi as to what Jewish law has to say about it.

He also questioned my credentials as a psychologist. I wrote him this which I sent to his wife who actually thanked me for the first email I sent about his refusal to wear a heart rate monitor

Unlike you I am a mental health professional with an MA in psychology and was employed in a mental hospital in Connecticut with seriously ill patients e.g. psychotics, bipolar etc..  I didn’t like working with that population and decided to work in stress management which I taught in Israel and the USA in medical clinics and privately in English and Hebrew.

I also taught cessation of cigarette smoking in Hebrew in Israel,
and co-taught a course on relief for migraine sufferers in English in Israel.

I used the following modalities which I received extensive training in:

Hypnosis and self-hypnosis based on the work of Dr. Milton Erickson who was credited with the American Medical Society accepting hypnosis as a valid therapy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_H._Erickson

Guided imagery and Jungian dreamwork in a process called Active Imagination
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_im ... us%20minds.

Journal writing  mainly Ira Progoff’s Intensive Journal Method which  I taught for many hundreds of hours and created my own
https://intensivejournal.org/
using Jungian dreamwork and gestalt therapy processes,

Relaxation inductions

Eugene Gendlin’s focusing system
https://focusing.org/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwveK ... KpEALw_wcB

Deep breathing from which I received extensive training in graduate school and the learning of hypnosis and self-hypnosis.

I created a very unusual course that linked one’s goal(s), beliefs, strategies to a chronic stress situation. For instance long term financial stress or family stress where the individual blames the stress on outside influences without considering his/her contribution. This is not a short term stress like war which can go on a long time. I won’t explain the physiology which you may already know, except to say the biology of human beings evolved to deal with short term stresses such as running away from lions or tigers. Long term chronic stress has been linked to cancer, heart disease, and a host of terrible illnesses.

https://www.google.com/search?q=long+te ... e&ie=UTF-8
“Long-term—or chronic—stress can cause higher levels of inflammation in the body that contribute to increases in plaque buildup in the arteries—and that can lead to such problems as coronary artery disease,” says Dr. Lampert. Coronary artery disease can lead to heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, and heart failure.

If I told you how to install windows and doors, you’d say I was an idiot. That is not my field of expertise. Mental health diagnoses is not your field of expertise.

4) I was wrong to call you in an agitated state last night. I only called today to apologize. I got into another agitated state from which I have recovered.

5) I should never again confide in you about my personal life especially with my wife. I am not an idiot who believes life is easy as you claimed. I know life can be difficult. I blame myself for the conversation and my reaction to your reaction and your advice.

7) You were extremely relaxed at the dinner you so generously bought for me a few weeks ago. I didn’t understand that I could cause you enormous stress by talking about selling your business. As you know, I have considerable business experience working as an editor for a stock brokerage company and as general manager for a corporation with numerous video and pinball arcades throughout the United States.

8) I am sending a copy of this to your wife Y for her to review.

I hope you will take this letter seriously. I am concerned about your health, or I’d have never written this. I am not asking for payment.

The above email was forwarded to his wife plus this. She has a sister living in Tampa.

Dear Y

You are in an extremely difficult situation with your husband. It took a long time to write this and was interrupted by an incoming missile attack as noted. I need a break from Israel.

I didn’t mention in the first email I sent you that he told me he has numerous issues including wanting to live by a California stream somewhere. When I returned to the subject of his maximum heart rate, he immediately changed the subject and talked about his diet. I couldn’t believe it. I am not a medical doctor, although I have studied nutrition needs particularly protein requirements for training programs and especially the elderly. I have corresponded with Professor Emeritus Donald Layman, an expert in protein nutrition with hundreds of published papers.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Profess ... e&ie=UTF-8

I did not mention protein requirements to your husband because I found our discussion extremely frustrating and stressful as did he.
I don’t want to become involved in his business and personal life again. I apologized to him in this email and probably on the phone. I am pretty calm at this point having emerged from the specially constructed sealed room in my apartment.

Bram I was really stupid to get so enraged. i got over it. I am no longer going to involve myself in his life. I violated this and contacted his wife today.
She claims he is very depressed and screams at his partner of 18 years. He wants to sell his share of a business that's split 50-50. The partner is a sadist who enjoys tormenting him. I decided to give up on both of them. He claims his wife is mentally ill. I suppose they both are.

The face time conversation was worse. The guy in Palo Alto has a rare blood cancer. His brother told me it's nowhere near as serious and he is not dying as he claims. he makes up stories to get sympathy. He started to talk about politics and I said I don't want to. Like an idiot, I got suckered into it. He said not to fly to Florida, it's the worst state in the USA. Trump is Hitler who will destroy America if elected. I joked and said why don't we switch. you can stay in my apartment and i'll move into yours. he said fine except i'd have to feed his cats. i have an allergy to cats.

He said go to Thailand and get a beach massage. Phuket Thailand is flooded right now. I asked him what's a beach massage - the masseuse masturbates you? That's what it was. he thought it was funny. I need to feel some love for a woman if I'm with her sexually. maybe i'm weird. at least i'm laughing at how absurd this seems.

He said go to Baja. I said some surfers were just killed in Baja. What about Bali. dead australian surfers there too. then he suggested Belize where my wife advised farmers and told me it's not worth it. how about costa rica. i was there and spent 29 bucks a day on food and wasn't eating much. it's a fortune. then he said Nicaragua but he retracted it probably because the leader locked up 40,000 gang members in a huge prison.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB7dI0Tk3dw&t=1s

You probably think I'm crazy but at least I'm having a good laugh. I won't subject myself to this guy again - i blocked him on email and on

I referred the acquaintance to one of my teachers at Tel Aviv University. It was funny because the guy said he no longer needed strength training since he got his blood pressure down. I had told him during our conversation that we lose fast twitch type 2 muscle which helps us from falling, the leading cause of death of the over 65 crowd. I sent him this short video clip of Peter Attia and Joe Rogan and the name of my teacher. I don’t know if he will do anything with it, but he would be a fool not to try and help himself. This is part of a letter I wrote to him.

I hope you and your family are well. This is a very short video clip of 6 minutes ten seconds of how strength and cardiovascular training lower the risk of death from all causes far more than any medication, cessation of smoking, or obesity.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92kYDVjX0G0

There are a lot of other things going on. I expect a horrible war soon. It's not possible to fly out of here now. My ticket to Miami can be used all of 2025. There was a terror attack today near the oil storage depot that if exploded will kill ten thousand people. I also saw my wife. Our marriage of 38 years feels like it's over.

Whether I like it or not, I am an American. I don't belong here anymore. I thought it best to wait until near the end of tourist season in Florida which is April before flying to Miami. By then I'd know which parts of Florida are underwater or without power. I read about surfing in Alabama. I'd probably go up there near the Florida panhandle during spring break which is March 19 to April 1 according to what I just read on the internet. I was there during spring break in 1977 and didn't realize it. There was nowhere to stay.

There are no waves the next few days. Maybe it's just as well. Iran is going to strike. I hope you're well.

Lenny,

In February of 2023, I stopped giving unsolicited advice.

In November of 2023, I stopped hanging out with draining people.

These have been good changes :)

When the surf sucks, it feels like a blessing to tackle chores, lifting, yoga, etc. But the surf is good today here. Chores & gym tomorrow!

Currently at my favorite café, reading about Internal Family Systems. It’s super interesting! Are you familiar?

I glanced at it, but I felt it wasn't worth my time. Are you reading from a book or a website. If so which one?

I picked up the book: No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz. It was suggested by a friend (she's in a master's program for social and emotional learning) and by my cousin's college-aged daughter who's been through some heavy bouts of depression (she dropped out of high school).

I experimented with his method a few days ago and liked the results.
