Dude!! I fucking LOVE sailing!! My former brother in-law, Big John P is a licensed captain! Last time we sailed he let me take the helm, we were in a trimaran, and we fucking SMOKED a huge yacht!!

Sailing is awesome!!!

My retirement goal is to own nice sailboat that I can spend a week or so on at one time. Nothing but good times.

Not for me. Too used to motors. Was in the Keys and out on a catamaran. When they shut down the engines to go under sail, it was like I was in the ER and someone unplugged the life support. Give me that diesel thrum.

It was awesome. We made it from Berkeley to McCovey cove, hung out there for a while...

3 years ago, a few of us were hanging out at a place down by the water and my buddy said he thought it would be awesome to take a bunch of people out sailing.

So he went and signed up for lessons, got three or four certifications, and this was the first time he was ready and had a chance to do it.

7 of us went and 3 of us did the work. More taxing than you'd expect, but so much fun. I had a big old face boner the whole day.

edit: Scratch that. Different buddy wanted to do it, but never did. I don't remember if I was there when he first had the idea. Not sure what happened to the other guy.

That'd be awesome. Just sell whatever house you've got when you get to that point, put a chunk of it into a sailboat, and use the rest for booze, strippers, cigarettes and rent.

At least, that's what I'd do.

I know a fellow who did that in his mid-30's. Saved up, cashed out, and sailed around the world for a year.

My BIL has a 47 ft Hinckley, spends summer up here in MA and winter in the Bahama's. Makes his living taking charters out. Not a bad way to go about it, really. It is always a blast hooking up with them for a weekend on the boat.

I used to bartend at a yacht club. Got pulled into some of the Wednesday night races, which was fun as hell with some of the adrenaline junkies. Did not care one bit if they sank their J24. Tell you what, those white privileged sailors could drink. During Audi race week, used to start serving rum and tonics at 7 am.

Sailing = cool.

I'm building a boat that looks very close to this one, and hope to eventually build one I can live on for cruising.

Went sailing the Bahamas with my F-in-L many years ago. After spending 3 days in dry dock getting boat repairs, spending 16 hours motoring against the wind, lost the rudder, and my F-in-L not trusting the nav, spent about 6 hours in the shoals off Andros on the bow looking for rocks, and then weathered a storm pulling into Chub Cay, my husband lost our return airplane tickets. I will NEVER go sailing again.

Which one are you building?

I look at proas a fair amount, which are mostly a build-your-own affair. Outrigger sailing canoes are cool too.

Taht's crazy, I used to drink at a yacht club. Real shitty one when I was in college. We didn't do any sailing or anything else though.

Sinking a J24? That sounds kind of fun.

My best friend, who happened to be on the boat yesterday, has a J24 he's fixing up to put in the water in the next week or two. Pumped on that, but I don't think we'll sink it. Not on purpose.

I have plans for this.

Need to finish my latest kayak to clear the space. Latest kayak build is this...which I need to get on the water before it gets too cold.

Nick Schade designs cool stuff. I'm building a wood strip baidarka (not his), which has been a headache.

I don't know shit about kayaks but that looks pretty cool Nafod. Hopefully you weren't playing that Dave Matthews crap while you were building it.

Not a lot of rocker. Outer Island? Redfish design?
