VERMILLION, S.D. >> A student organization at the University of South Dakota has been told that holding a “Hawaiian Day” party violates the school’s policy on inclusiveness.

So, the Student Bar Association has renamed its winter social event “Beach Day.” And even though the group is encouraging members to wear floral shirts, it won’t be distributing lei at the party.

Law school administrators advised the students not to distribute lei because using items of cultural significance might be viewed as inappropriate, according to the Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls.

The administration advised the association to change the Hawaiian theme of the event based on a complaint by a student who expressed concern about the use of indigenous cultural symbols, according to Michelle Cwach, the university’s director of marketing communications.

The unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another society.

Now, are you English? Is the plaintiff? Am I? If it's wrong to use Hawaiian lei, words, traditions etc. when you aren't Hawaiian, then why isn't it wrong to use the English language, Anglo customs, costume, etc. The bottom line about all this grievance culture is that it is a one way street where the same standards could never be applied in both directions.

For no particular reason, the etymology of "fuck" came to mind... Germans say fuck freely, appropriation gone full circle.

The Oxford English Dictionary states that the ultimate etymology is uncertain, but that the word is "probably cognate" with a number of Germanic words with meanings involving striking, rubbing and having sex or is derivative of the Old French word that meant "to fuck."

However, the connection to futuere has been disputed‍—‌Anatoly Liberman calls it a "coincidence" and writes that it is not likely to have been borrowed from the Low German precursors to fuck.[9]

Greek phyō (φύω) has various meanings, including (of a man) "to beget", or (of a woman), "to give birth to".[10] Its perfect pephyka (πέφυκα) can be likened[citation needed] to "fuck" and its equivalents in other Germanic languages.

Of course, in reality, it's just another stick to beat white people with. Nobody calls it cultural appropriation when a Mexican has a hamburger, or a black person straightens their hair, nor should they, but the unidirectionality of the accusations are plain to see.
