The Dying Russians

Post by Fat Cat »

The Dying Russians
Between 1992 and 2009, the Russian population declined by almost seven million people, or nearly 5% — a rate unheard of in Europe since World War II.

Very interesting little article regarding the out-sized population decline of the USSR and Russian Federation, by Masha Gessen. I'm not a fan of hers, by the way, but it's well written and does justice to an investigation into the causes of broad, multi-generational population decline.

Not being Russian, while I admire their civilization, my interest is closer to home. Legacy American mortality has been increasing alarmingly with diseases of dispair: alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide. I see many parallels between the loss of hope in Russian society and that which we see in American society today.

Particularly with the social isolation of the COVID-40,000 era, my concern grows about the sense of blackpilled hopelessness that is so alien to the American spirit.

I am referring to a phenomenon which has been in play for a lot longer than the coronavirus, although it has been exacerbated by the lockdown(s). It was fueled by the destruction of American manufacturing in the 1990s, the 2008 economic recession, the opioid crisis, and demographic change. Just a sampling:

I wonder what other liberal democracies are experiencing this besides the US. My Canadian friends still seem positive about their country and its values. I suspect Brexit was was a black pill reaction as were the ascendancies of Bernie and Trump.

Canadians are united in their love of facebook and sharing memes mocking the U.S.
