RMax Powered Running and Skyline Chili

Post by GoDogGo! »

Jason (Onealjn) sent me this, damn his eyes.

"Rmax Powered Running" made me think of heroic dog movies, or maybe bad scifi. You know how in a "heroic dog" movie, there's always a scene of the dog running back and forth and barking, and then someone says "Wait! I think he's trying to tell us something!"

It happens in cheesy alien movies, too. An alien approaches the hero and says "EEEEEEblrblrblrwolla!" The hero's about to blow it away when his female sidekick (who is more intuitive, because she has ovaries) says "Wait! I think it's trying to tell us something!"

So it is with "Rmax Powered Running." After 5 minutes or so of Scott Sonnon's stream-of-consciousness glossolalia, I realized that he was trying to tell me something. I'm not sure what it was. It may have had to do with running.

The mental fog it produced cleared a bit later, and I noticed that there is actually a decent joint-mobility routine in the "Preparing to Run" segment. In particular I like the 4-corner leg drill, and if it weren't widely available on the 'net, it would have justified the effort of inserting the DVD into the player.

There is also a series of stretches after that, but I'm not sure what those were about, because that segment had no narration. It may have been running-fetish porn for the hearing-impaired. If so, I salute Rmax's effort to reach out to an neglected segment of the porn-viewing population.

This was so bad that I had to watch "Big Bad Mama" afterwards, just to clear the air. Since that film actually contains a sex scene with Angie Dickinson and William Shatner, well, you get the idea. Stick with Pose or Chi running.

Then I tried this stuff called "Skyline Chili" that somehow found its way into the same package as the DVD. It is a beefy-tomato-based substance, sort of like Texas Pete hot dog chili, but runnier. It is not chili. Also, you eat it on spaghetti, yet it is not Bolognese. It's not bad, but I won't miss it if I never eat it again.

Overall, a deeply unsatisfying experience on all counts. I'm still looking for something sufficiently awful to send Jason in return.

Dawg,

Expand, if you will, on the JM routine. I need a good warmup to running.

BTW Chi Running is excellent. And no chili.

I will steel myself and watch that part again. I dunno, I may have to watch Russ Meyer's "Supervixens" to recover.

Chi Running, the POSE methodology, and there's some other DVD that I got for my wife (which she of course hasn't watched) that has similar things about running easier, longer, and faster, injury-free...all are decent ways to improve your running.

I got a lot out of some old post Scott made on his original "Knuckledragger" forum about running and took up barefoot running which improved how my body responded to the pounding after I engrained the mechanics.

GDG echoes my thoughts on the fact the RMAX Powered Running is simply nothing other than closeted homo-erotic porn.

Bucket, I can't imagine that you do not have some kinda JM experience already. The stuff on Powered Running is a stripped down version of all of Scott's JM stuff previous. Spinal rocks being a great warm-up for things, including work in the morning.

The vibration drills are dubious in my opinion and it looks like Scott and Joe are trying to get their jollies off in public.

If you have never had any introduction to JM, let me know and I will send you Intu-Flow, if you can send it back within six months. (I don't use it, but like to lend it to people).

And in the spirit of bad chain letters GDG could send you the running DVD; that would make me happy.

Chi Running IMHO is the best and most elegant system out there. POSETECH gets kinda whacky.

I agree.

Posetech's also associated with Crossfit wackiness.

The goal of being able to run faster, easier, and with less injuries is good.

The POSE founder suppressed the fact that all of his elite runners acquired injuries due to changed running form a few months after the study. Something that might be popping up on the @F forum injury forum soon.

And the POSE dude is attempting to apply his principles to every fucking movement man can engage in. $$$$$

While I have a somewhat kinder opinion of this DVD, I have to agree that the presentation didn't quite "gel", something that seems to happen often with the "RMAX Powered" DVD series. It's like they were too ambitious for the resources and time they had to film it, and they also didn't quite think things through.

I much prefer it when Sonnon just stands in front of a camera and demonstrates his stuff while he talks about it. Joe Wilson's "FlowMotion" DVD is also quite a bit better than his "RMAX Powered" material.
"I also think training like a Navy S.E.A.L. is stupid for the average person. I would say PT like an infantry unit, run, body weight stuff, hump a little, a little weights and enjoy life if you are not training for specifics." -tough old man

ABW, you are just kind. I've stated elsewhere the Sonnon's stuff is usually pretty good, aside from his blog and forum.

This DVD is a piece of shit for $40. They also promoted it for at least a year prior to its release. They said they needed the time to pour all their resources into and present the incredible amount of knowledge.

Your blog posts on his spinal rocks and breathing stuff is right on, even if he didn't invent the wheel he claims to have.

I was going to go for "hebephrenic schizophrenia," but thought that might be rude.
