Shaf's Books 2009

Post by Shafpocalypse Now »

Two I've read recently. I just finished the Vachss novel last night.

Andrew Vachss - Another Life, the last Burke novel

You should read Vachss. No way around it. That's all. Dark. Unrelenting. I did find some of the social commentary a big distracting at times, but this isn't always the case with Vachss. There are 18 Burke novels in all.

Joe R. Lansdale - Leather Maiden

Another one that can't be missed. Lansdale is a storyteller with very few peers. He keeps getting better. An Iraqi war vet, and a previous Pulitzer Prize nominee comes home. He takes over a position at the local paper and gets caught up in his predecessor's investigation of a story in between getting fucked up and stalking his ex-girlfriend.

Thanks for the Lansdale recommend.

I need a well written fast moving mystery. Hiaassen is becoming mannered, Leonard doesn't write much anymore, Lee Child is repeating himself. Only James Lee Burke continuously delivers.

But the Lansdale reviews make it look like the kind of read I'll enjoy.

Just bought it, so if it sucks, I'll bill you...

I love Hiassen but haven't read anything of his since Skinny Dip. How are his most recent ones?

JLB would be third on that list. I love his stuff.
