You are probably the only one who could understand this well enough reading this to give a valid opinion on why Gerlach was disqualified.
It's obvious that he kicked Potter before Potter retaliated. It seems to me that Gerlach is complaining to the judges that Potter did something to his board before the kick.

Here is what I found on google about the incident
you can read it here. Potter says it derailed Gerlach's chances of winning a world championship which Potter won that year.

The crazy thing is that Gerlach on his website waveki.com teaches the takeoff with his head down. He didn't do that in the contest.
here are some other links if you want to check.

it wasn't cheap for a year which was better than month to month. i had decided to get a refund after reviewing the material. I only had maybe 5 days. but it was too late. it wasn't long after the war started. i didn't have time to check through the material well enough.
months later, i wrote to Gerlach saying how he should make changes in the instructional videos on how to take off including keeping the camera angle on him from the ceiling a lot longer for a full take off on the floor where he demonstrates the take off but he never replied.
I learned it that way and then when I saw this from Josh Kerr which I may have sent you before it made no sense at all to take off that way with head down

Josh was number 8 on the world tour for two years which is a very high level.
