For my android phone and tablet (iOS too) there is an app called pulse. Does a good job with news stories you select, as well as rss feeds. I get all the news I want in one app.

They might have a pc app, but I don't know how good it is.

I just can't get into pulse. Tried it, but I like flipboard better.

SpeedDash.com is supposed to be good if you don't have a problem paying $5/month.

I'm still waiting for The Old Reader.c

Feedly is only an acceptable Google Reader alternative if you hate Google Reader. If you like Google Reader, Feedly is worthless.

I noticed this upon 30 seconds of download....it's too tumblrific. Can't really handle intuitively plowing though text quickly, saving stuff for later etc.

I'm going to stop worrying about alternatives to Google Reader until a week or two before its demise. At this point, any discussion you find online is dominated by Lifehacker douchebags who never used Google Reader but are now excited by the opportunity to talk about their preferred magazine-like reading app.

Fuck those assholes and the desks they "made" themselves out of stuff they bought from IKEA.

Lifehacker was great when they launched it. Now, it has to make you laugh fairly frequently.

RE: Old Reader - I have no idea what it takes to import subscribers but as slow as it is progressing, it appears that it involves a guy manually doing it in between frequently bathroom breaks.

In to The Old Reader and it isn't bad though a lot of the time, I get "WE ARE SORRY THAT THE OLD READER IS UNAVAILABLE".

So what is the purpose of a reader app? I feel like I'm missing out on something exciting.

I monitor over 200 RSS feeds for various projects. I couldn't do that any other way. It's not like I'm going to subscribe to 200 email lists to keep up with what's going on.

For people who don't do business online, a reader app or service probably isn't needed.

I've been using Feedly a lot lately. The app for Android is full on, massive titties in your face awesome. I'm getting used to the web version, but really love it on my SAMSUNG GALAXY S3, motherfuckers.

David Pogue reviews Feedly and says nice things.

I tend to like it more than The Old Reader.

Does the Android version allow a simple list view yet?

Not sure u follow. Without the colors? Out without the categories/folders?

I slept the hours and have been at the doctor for my knee all day, so I'm a little behind right now.

Pinky, yes it does. It's not the default but you can change in "advanced settings"

I haven't looked at in a while. The version of the Android app I installed (and then uninstalled) would not allow me to get rid of the magazine-style layout. I wanted a more minimalistic list view of posts (like Google Reader), but that was only an option on the desktop browser version.

Buckethead, thanks. It sounds like they've finally made their mobile app useful.

Everything about Feedly's Android app is great, except it's stability. It is the least stable app on either my phone or my tablet by a wide margin.
