I saw it and liked it. The 3d is a lot of fun, and it's a great story about what makes a man and a warrior and a king, and about the transition from the pagan-warrior culture to the christian culture. It's a fairy tale and, with the 3-d, enjoyable.
But to scratch the itch I rented "Beowulf and Grendel" from netflix a while back. It was a really entertaining little flick. Worth a rental just for the Icelandic scenery.

I really liked it. Maybe it was all the bad reviews that lowered my expectations. In fact, I liked it so much that I got a copy. As was said, the transition from pagan to Christian culture was nicely explained. And the whole hero journey thing got a major re-working that made me look at the original tale in a whole new light.
