The MMA Guard Book by Nog

Post by Kazuya Mishima »

'Mastering Mixed Martial Arts: The Guard' by Antonio Nogueira

Best treatment of the MMA guard that I have seen in any media to date. Nog covers full guard, open guard, butterfly guard, half guard, and the downed guard vs standing opponent. The beauty is in the controls and set-ups that he shows. Also, this is not just a book full of isolated techniques...there are plenty of those on the market. Each technique flows into the other depending upon your opponent's energy and reaction, and he shows transitions from one position to the other (from closed to open to butterfly, etc).

Emphasis is on developing an active guard that controls your opponent and nullifies his attempts at striking. Many of the techniques are also applicable to no-gi submission wrestling, so it also fills a nice niche for those grapplers not interested in MMA. Got mine for $24.95 at Borders which is a steal considering the information that he lays out.

Does he teach you how to get punched in the head until your brain rattles around inside your skull?

Do as he says, not as he does.

The problem, IMHO: the BTT/Gracie Barra fighting guard is shit and will get you punched in the head. If you are serious about using jiujitsu guard in unrestricted fighting, I implore you to seek out one of Relson Gracie's many seminars across the continental USA. It's completely different and is predicated on never, ever getting punched in the head.
