Those look like the jackets they give to all participants of that race.

A bit over five years ago I recall seeing a pretty slow runner wearing one of those every weekend
for almost a year to the various coffee/bagel shops his running club frequented after their
weekly long runs. This guy had a personal best run about an hour over the cutoff for Boston
qualification for his age group.

He signed up for some charity and got to run Boston and hence got the jacket.

Most of that crowd appeared to be too heavy to be decent runners. A lot of them will probably be
wearing those jackets on weekends and "impressing" their friends too. :toimonster:

The majority of people who run the Boston Marathon do not running qualifying times at it. Even if they're slow, they're staying active, having fun, contributing to the economy if not donating to charity, encouraging others to do the same, and so forth.

A lot of runners took up running after some sort of destructive lifestyle (obesity, drugs, anti-social, etc) and so merely finishing something like the Boston Marathon often represents the culmination of a major life turnaround. Remind me again why wearing the jacket is a bad thing?

A guy I played baseball with in HS with and his wife both had their left legs amputated yesterday. This really made it hit home.

Jesus Christ that is awful. It's hard to wrap my head around it.

Local bomb guy was commenting on how horrible it was but how glad he was that the bomb maker made really shitty (by comparison to bomb made with C4, semtex or other high explosive) and how much more horrible it could have been.
My best wishes to all who were injured and their loved ones.

I have been avoiding most of the 'news' but don't Islamic terrorists generally gloat and tell you that it was them who did the deed?

That's something I was thinking about earlier. By now, if it was a group, you would expect a claim of responsibility.

IIRC, Al Qaeda stood out early on for not taking credit for attacks.

Suspect arrested. Fucking hell that was fast.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Fast reporting, apparently. CNN is a lie man.

Well, a hearty good luck to the investigator's and cross your fingers for the Constitution. There's obviously a shit ton of pressure on everyone to get a solid lead going. If they don't, 4Chan/Anonymous might start executing people by proxy.

From Yahoo!, well Reuters I guess.

"BOSTON (Reuters) - Security officials on Wednesday ordered staff, media and attorneys to evacuate Boston's federal courthouse, according to a Reuters reporter on the scene.

Scores of people could be seen leaving the building. No further details were immediately available.

"Get away from the building. I can't stress this enough, people," a uniformed law enforcement official yelled at the crowd."

Between the Aryan Brother hood that turned out to be a judge's wife that Johno just posted, and all of this crap, it's been amazing how poorly the media has handled stories recently.

Oddly enough, I was fairly impressed with NBC and Brian Williams. He asked one analyst if there were any ideas or speculation on who was behind the attack. Guy responded that it would be premature and irresponsible to start down that path when they didn't even know how many people were hurt or killed (or something to that effect).

Asked a second analyst, who was a little looser with his statements but IIRC, didn't actually try to point the finger.

Compare that to CNN, which seemed to be the worst of all the major outlets in whoring for pictures and video and all the crap speculation, etc.

The new bomb threats are likely just assholes taking advantage of raw nerves and the fact that the cops can't take any chances now.

If any of that ends up being true, I'm not sure whether to be terrified or pleased with 4chan's reach. The two chaps in matching clothes made me think cops.
