Car accident, rapid extrication of victim

Post by johno »

I've got to brag: my crew got the driver extricated from this wreck in record time.
They cut debris & rolled the dash, freeing the patient for rapid extrication and treatment.

When I pulled him out, I thought his head & torso were probably OK, and just his legs were FUBAR. But, no, he was pretty broken from head to foot.
So far, he's still alive. But I don't know if that just means he's on a ventilator, waiting to donate his organs. (Once we send patients to the hospital ER, it's very difficult to learn the outcome. (HIPPA rules & privacy concerns.)

Way to go, Johno...nothing much feels better than when everyone works together on the same page and shit goes as smooth as possible.
Kudos. Looks like a good job.

Did your crew use the Jaws of Life to free the driver?

Yeah but did you have to smash the front end, tear off a wheel, and bust the windshield to do it??

Buttercup - Thanks. Sometimes the evolution works great, and other times, all the metal wants to do is tear, and it takes forever.

Bob - Yes, we used the cutters, then the spreaders. Without those, the guy would have been pinned in the car for close to an hour. We got him out in 5-10 minutes.

Proto - Breaking stuff is the best part of the job.

******

The steering wheel was pressed into his chest and the dash was trapping his body. Additionally, the roof was buckled, pressing against the back of his head. When my fire fighter used the spreaders, everything lifted off of him so we could pull him up & out, onto a backboard.

If he can recover to some kind of normal life, then I hope we saved him. We gave him the best chance possible.

PS - The kicker: there was a childseat in the backseat of the car. So he was some kid's father.
Thank God he wasn't taking the kid to daycare, because the childseat was messed up.

Nice work to you and your team. Good medics make my work easier.

Of course, bad medics make my work easier too - the patient is simply DOA by the time of arrival.

Good work. But, did you have to keep blocking traffic for so long? GOD. These people won't stop calling to ask why traffic is backed up!

I smash up a car with no one in it. And I'm "sick"? You do it with the owner injured, inside the vehicle. You're "a hero"? What kind of a fucking society is this.

Yeah, we ran on a motorcycle wreck on Easter Sunday. Dude had his 8 year old girl on the back. He had a depressed skull fracture above his left eye which was swollen to the point of being damn near ready to pop out. His little girl was OK, but her helmet was all scuffed up, so it's not hard to imagine what might have been. My guess is he held out his left hand behind him to try to shield her and whammered his face on the street. No bueno. Not sure if he lived or not.
I love Rescue shit. Where I'm at we fight some fires, but cut way more people out of cars. I'd say it's 3:1.
Again, nice work.
