This thread was very helpful. My conclusions are that there's no way to stop a well-armed, planned, professional attack like the Charlie Hebdo attack, but attacks like the one at the kosher grocery store are stoppable.

One solution is to allow concealed carry in the synagogue. Ohio law gives places of worship the power to decide whether allow, and my guess is that most members and visitors would respect either decision. Obviously, though, a policy against concealed carry means nothing to someone who comes to harm other than to give him more comfort that he's unlikely to run into someone carrying.

My synagogue has a number of ex-military and others who have permits, including a military wife who comes to a lot of the kids programs. Does it make sense to allow or encourage concealed carry in the synagogue? That requires putting a lot of trust in the people who carry. Is the risk too high with lots of kids running around that an accident could happen?

My leanings are to allow/encourage it, though to exercise some discretion to try to make sure whoever does carry is well-trained, and to institute the best practices policies that are being developed for schools and the like. Thoughts appreciated.

IMO, if armed adults carry concealed on their persons with holsters appropriate to their sidearms, chances of an accident are near zero.

Don't get too carried away with the "well-trained" concept. You don't need folks to be Delta Force/SEAL TM6 Ninjas to qualify. Successful police/military service that involved operating handguns should work. Better yet, enroll your guardians in an NRA firearms safety course.
