The comparison was more one of humor than reality. It's all about his arrogance and posturing about being elite at anything other than failing to finish a race. Though he's still running significantly slower than guys that run 135 miles through Death Valley.kreator wrote:Let's be serious here. Running through Death Valley on pace to cover 40-something miles is going to be slow, even if you're trained for it. Yes, the average guy can walk 15 minute miles on flat ground in comfortable conditions. But throw in elevation, extreme temperature, and the fatigue that comes after walking for an hour (have you ever brisk walked for an hour straight?), and the average dude would not be able to do that.
All that said, the hubris this guy has is astounding. It's even worse in person. I don't think it would be so bad if he just came out and said "in light of our failures/disappointments, we might have to change how we train." But he doesn't. I'm all for trying new things and whatever, but when something fails to work time and time again ... isn't that time to move on to something that works?

USA Weightlifting/CrossFit Open
USA Weightlifting/CrossFit Open
The Crossfit / USA Weightlifting Open will feature athletes competing in three disciplines: the Olympic-style snatch and clean & jerk as well as a third CrossFit event called the Triplet. The Triplet will be as many rounds as possible in 10 minutes of six squat cleans (55kg men / 30kg women), 12 pull-ups and 24 double unders. Athletes will compete in the seven women’s and eight men’s Olympic weight divisions as they vie for titles.
"We're very pleased to offer this unique competition with USA Weightlifting. Athletes will now be able to compete in a multi-modal event that includes both weightlifting using standard international competition rules and a 10-minute CrossFit Triplet. Not only will the winners of each division have to demonstrate outstanding strength, power and weightlifting technique, but also the additional fitness required for the CrossFit Triplet," said Dave Castro, CrossFit's Director of Training. "A huge thanks to Rick Adams and USAW for hosting the event."

and as for an average dude - most of the people i knew in the military (not secret squirrels at all) maintained a 15min pace carrying about 50lbs of shit thru pretty varied, hilly and shitty terrain (tho, admittedly not death valley).
have you ever been as far as even considered go want to do look more like?

Guys, quick, do a WOD, the Apocalypse is coming:
http://www.board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?p=808620
The human body's capacity for adaptation is both incredible and essential for our survival. All over the world animals are forced to evolve to the point of where their survival is not only possible, but probable. From the dawn of time-until now the Earth is constantly changing. The only thing certain is inevitable change. Climates are shifting, variations in water elevation, ozone layer, and etc. Any species that die out during these times, were unprepared for adaptation. If our planet NEVER remains stagnant, why should you? This is why I am different! This is why I am CrossFit. This is what differentiates most of us from them!
