Good luck asking him, kid. I was reading MM2000 and buying his books when you were jerking off to your dad's porn stash hidden in the mattress.

The flag football team at the local CF is 1-4 and has been outscored 111-31. They play in the lowest division (D)

Wonder if they follow CF Football?

FWIW, the son of a buddy of mine is at Navy OCS. He is currently in medical hold due to rhabdo. Three guesses for the training protocol.

Well, that depends on how you'd answer the question, "What is fitness?" Too bad there's not a finely honed definition.cunch wrote:A sensible approach to health and fitness?stosh wrote:FWIW, the son of a buddy of mine is at Navy OCS. Re: The couch thread
Marine DI's doing OCS still? Newport used to be strictly OIS (aka knife and fork) with just chiefs and RLO's doing the indoc, with the AOCS and OCS combined in Pensacola oh so long ago (you can see I cared enough to keep up) run by Marine DIs and Chiefs.powerlifter54 wrote:The Crawdaddy wrote:Pensacola or Rhode Island?stosh wrote:FWIW, the son of a buddy of mine is at Navy OCS. The use of @fit at OCS is stupid beyond belief. Before my son-in-law left the Corps last year, it had taken a pretty strong hold at Pendleton.

Re: The couch thread
My friend said the Marines are whole-hog xfit. And when his son signed up there was no mention of xfit in any of the materials. He shows up and that's what they're doing. Now he might be coming home.powerlifter54 wrote:Marine DI's doing OCS still? Holy jumping white trash jeebus.......2 more @fits just opened within 2 miles of my house. That makes 17 within 10 miles and if I cross the line into Queens or expand out further east there are ~50 within 40 miles. These things are spreading faster than STD's on spring break. Typical coaching experience for the new boxes; 1 year of @fitting and a Level I cert.

Re: The couch thread
Travesty? More like a fucking mystery.
I'm wondering when the price wars will start and the bubble will collapse. Now each new one that opens charges more than the existing ones. I was told no one wants to "devalue" the product. (OK I threw up a little in my mouth just writing that). The oldest McBoxes with the most experienced "trainers" charge the least.

Re: The couch thread
As little as these people know about fitness and training, they know even less about how to run a business. I doubt any of the boxes in my town are making any sort of measurable profit or return on their investment.
Nobody should pay full price for a crossfit membership, it is just to easy to negotiate them down.

Bennigans used to be a pretty hopping spot no matter where you went. Eventually it got overvalued, worn down, a bit skanky, and any level of quality it once had disappeared. Even cheap drinks and high testosterone/low self esteem types staying late for cheap drinks couldn't save them.

Basketball coach Brian McCormick weighs in on Crossfit:
http://developyourbballiq.com/crossfit- ... -training/
If you don't know of McCormick, he is a well-respected figure in the basketball coaching community. He's a fascinating person to see jump in on this, because he could not give a shit how strong or "fit" you are. He's not a fitness guru, at all. The only thing he cares about is, what will make players better at playing basketball? What can coaches do to help their players be better at basketball? What is the best way to structure training time, to make players better at basketball? And most importantly, what can we prove about what works and what does not?
He has a wide-ranging intellect, and will look to sports like soccer and volleyball and grappling, for ideas he can apply to his main area of focus. He also has a relentless bullshit filter. I have huge respect for the guy.

Calm, objective, even-handed, reasonable. Way out-of-place in the ongoing Crossfit commentary.I think Glassman is a marketing genius. If he writes a business or marketing book, I will read it.
...
The problem with Crossfit, and the reason that many S&C coaches disparage it, is that there appears to be very little training theory. Much like the basketball development system and its hodge-podge of programs without any overriding philosophy, workouts appear from day to day with little apparent planning. Further, like the current youth sports environment, hard or intense trumps everything else.
...
I watched part of an on-court workout designed by the Crossfitter. There was nothing inherently novel or wrong with the workout. However, the technique was terrible. As players got tired, the quality of the work worsened. The workout was beyond the work capacity of the players. This is where injuries occur because the body is not prepared for the work. This is a major critique of Crossfit.
...
There was no instruction period.
...
Another critique of Crossfit is the lack of periodization.
...
From a sports-preparation perspective, I do not believe in the efficacy of Crossfit for high-school or college athletes because these athletes need instruction and preparation to maximize their training. Basketball is a game of movement; training poor movement intensely is not going to make a player better. Quality of training is more important than quantity. Too often, in training, we put the cart (intensity) before the horse (technique). Crossfit certainly encourages this. Young athletes need appropriate, progressive training to maximize the benefits.

I hadn't seen this article before, some might find it useful to prevent another loss to the cult:

Along with the above article, seems many are onto the big issues of @F.

Re: The couch thread
Then again, you also have to consider how @Fitty his training really is. The guy he's training with is apparently a former pro football player, so he might not have given him a completely Kool-Aid-y program, etc etc.

Let us not underestimate the ego and stupidity of the nOOb (particularly a genetically gifted one) in @F.When Hendel began working with Johnson, he focused on achieving full range of motion and proper form.
[...]
For the rest of Johnson’s training, Hendel also employed exercises from legendary powerlifter Louie Simmons, as
well as Tabata workouts and sprints. Other than those “extras,” Johnson stuck to Hendel’s CrossFit programming.
In addition to doing the Steelers’ workouts, Johnson will continue to do CrossFit, he said.

Sounds like strength training, sprints, and conditioning. Imagine that for a football player. WHY HASN'T ANYONE THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE!?!?11!
