Looks like Shari's working on fixing that loneliness, she sure knows how to strive for getting on HCwDB.com, doesn't she? Mohawk, tribal tats, never wearing a shirt, is there a checklist for this stuff?

The humor's that BJ was the original posterboy for a real athlete who trained using CF. Now he's bouncing a weighted lever thing on his feet. So much for that.Fish wrote: I would say that is legit. Conditioning and GPP sure are not the end-all of training, but they are still a relatively necessary component of a well structured program.

Shari's awesome. She's hot, built, and crazy as shit (over-40 crazy is way better than 20-something crazy). She won't say no to shit, and she'll go for hours. I would've shoved that piece of pvc up that prick's ass. Fucking asshole.T200 wrote:An @Fit ELITE GARAGE GYM experience:
It's Crossfit (Redacted). The "owner" (do people own affiliates?) is also named Dan. I was first surprised because he did not have us fill out any papers nor did he ask any questions about our health or anything. He just said, "For warm-up we're going to do two rounds of running 400 meters..." at which point I raised my hand and said, "I am not supposed to run because of my knees. Do you mind if I walk quickly?" He looked like I'd just asked if I could land a flying saucer in his yard and was silent for a moment before he said, "power walk?" I said yes, even though I'm not exactly sure what power walking is. But it sounded better than running. He said, "Then we'll do 10 push-ups and 15 squats. Go!" I went, and after walking quickly I went to do my push-ups on his wall. He was taken aback by this also.
I should pause at this point to say that I had probably made an unwise decision by spending an hour (or more) cleaning tobacco tar from the inside of the used car we bought in the 90+ degree heat and near 100% humidity in the sun. (Well over 100 degrees in the car.) I was literally dripping like a faucet before we even went to exercise. Not the best decision ever. But the car got clean!
Anyway, he took us into his garage to show us the proper way to do several exercises. The first was the squat, and he began by saying the bend of the hips should fall below the bend of the knees, and showing us how it is done. We all did our best, but I was in extreme pain (muscle) quite a while before my hips got that low. The folks in UT had said, "Just go as low as you can. People who are not in very good shape don't usually go very far down, but after a while you'll get there." This guy just said, "No. That's not it. You have to go down more." So we all tried. Then he told us to hold it while he came around to inspect us. (there was another woman there as well.) Staying like that in the sun and heat made me feel like I was about to faint, but when I stood up he told me to go back down, so I did. (I think he might be a drill sergeant in his other life.) I did not pass inspection, but he finally gave up on getting me down far enough and went on to some other things that were basically squats while holding a PVC pipe. They would be really great exercises under normal conditions, (no heat exhaustion) and if I had been allowed to just go how far I could without being in tons of pain. Any requests for a repeat of explanations were completely ignored. As it was, while holding one of these positions I started to faint (room going black) so I stood up and went quickly to sit on his step. He stopped talking and stared at me. Then asked if I was ok. I said "Just trying not to faint." He looked disgusted and turned around to continue with the others.
About this time Josh arrived (her son) and watched for a minute, then picked up a PVC pipe and started to join in, when the guy said, "You can't come in in the middle." (This was his only form of greeting and the only thing he said to Josh the entire time. Not the best social skills-- but that's another matter.) I stood up again to try to join in the next squat but almost passed out again just from standing, so I sat back down. When they had finished seeing how to do the squats, he sent them out to do some rounds of something. He made a point of saying the other three would do the rounds. I did not try to participate. While they ran I explained briefly that I had just spent an hour cleaning a car in this heat. He responded: "Cross fit is for--" he stopped himself. "Well, technically it's for everyone. But I have 17 athletes I work with here. We have a schedule and we can't wait around for someone like you." I stared at him. "Do you understand?" I said "yes." He said, "Maybe if you go home and get into shape, maybe you could come back and join us, but if you can't even get through this-- well." He walked off.
When he came near me later I tried again to explain that I was really just having problems with the heat, but he walked away. It was really like I was something disgusting he did not know how to deal with. Peter and Naomi (her other kids) had joined in the warm-ups off to the side, but had then sat down to play cards for the rest of the time. Before we left he said, "And I can't babysit your kids while you exercise." ???? I had not asked, expected or thought he might! I had asked on the phone before coming if it was ok for them to come along. He explained that he was not Crossfit Kids, but they could watch from the side and try some of the easier things on their own if they liked. Then he said again, "Maybe if you work out at home or even come to boot camp, you might be able to join us eventually. But I work with athletes." Then he turned his back and walked away. Even when we called out, "Thank you!" before getting in the car, he did not respond. He talked and smiled with the other lady, but made it very clear I was not welcome.

More good shit from Cultfit Greyskull

http://greyskullelite.blogspot.com/Steve pulls over 400 (405) for the first time in his life at 40 years old. A few months ago Steve had knee surgery. During his recovery he became fond of rack pulls from various heights. After weeks of driving his pin pull numbers up, and working chins, he developed a nasty top end and lockout. He's just recently been able to pull from the floor again. . . .

2nd fag:Another rhabdo account and a warning
Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my story here on the boards and to provide some information and a warning to whoever might read it.
Let me give you a bit of background on myself. I've been doing CF since January 2008, but got away from it for a while, and I just started back on a consistent basis in June of this year. My progress has been really good, and I regained all of my lost fitness within the first month, and started setting PRs consistently. I had never had rhabdo in the past, and to be honest I figured I was in good enough shape that I wouldn't have to worry about it.
However, on Wednesday, July 15th 2009 I did a workout which was 5 rounds of 30 GHD situps and 25 back extensions. Halfway through the workout I was finding it difficult to complete the sit-ups, so I started assisting them by using my arms to pull myself up. I completed the workout in 20 minutes, and I didn't feel particularly bad. My lower back was tight, but that tends to happen to me quite often. My abdominal muscles felt fine. Note that it was quite warm in the gym that day (80+ degrees), which may have played a factor in what was to come.
On Thursday my abs feel incredibly tight, like I'm wearing a corset or something. But they still didn't really hurt, so I figure it's just a bit of tightness from doing an exercise that I hadn't done in a while.
Friday is when the pain starts. My abs are killing me, and I can hardly walk because my hip flexors won't extend fully. I hobble around all day, thinking it's just DOMS and I'll be fine. That is, until Friday night when I went pee, and it looked like dark tea. I immediately knew that I had to get to the ER. I told the ER doc that I thought it might be rhabdo, but he kind of scoffed at that since he only ever saw accident and burn victims get rhabdo. Not healthy 25 year-olds from doing a 20 minute workout. But they run my urine and blood, and sure enough my CPK levels are at 75,000 (when they're supposed to be around 200). The doctor says that this is the highest CPK reading he'd ever seen, and they admitted me to the hospital for administration of IV fluids and electrolytes.
Long story short, I spent 6 days in the hospital, with my CPK levels peaking at 125,000 on Sunday. They had me on 2mg morphine every 3 hours for the first 3 days, which dulled the pain but not very much. After day 3 the pain began to subside, and as of today (2 weeks later) it's completely gone. My CPK levels at time of discharge were down to 1,400, and I was told that my kidney and liver function was back to normal, and that I had not done any permanent damage to them (thank God).
The moral of the story is this: don't take GHD sit-ups lightly! To be honest, I don't think they should be included in high-rep schemes in the WODs, or coach should include a warning any time they are prescribed. I've yet to attempt a WOD since I've been discharged, so I don't know how much my strength or endurance has been affected by the muscle damage. But even if there's no long term health or fitness effects, this is still serious stuff. Be very careful whenever doing any exercises with a large eccentric component (GHD situps, pullup negatives, etc.). And if your muscles fail you during the workout, it might be a heads up from your body telling you to kick back a bit and take it easy.
Just a friendly warning, and I hope this information can help someone else.
Fag with a handstand avatar:Re: Another rhabdo account and a warning
ow... I know what it feels like to not do GHD situps for a while, then throw down a few dozen of 'em. I do them every day in the warmup (a dozen or so), but even then, if I haven't done a workout with 50+ in it in the last few weeks, I definitely won't even touch a workout with 3 or 5 rounds of 25+ GHD situps.
Though honestly, anything with the negative motion like that are capable of inducing Rhabdo. Large muscle groups are even more susceptible, because you can overcompensate with other groups of muscles. So you think "I can keep going", but you really shouldn't. Heck, I do deadlifts all the time, and a 21-15-9 couplet with deadlifts really gave me a rough next few days, nothing horrible, but man did I feel it. One of the other owners (Jason David) probably gave himself a decent case of Rhabdo doing the 21-15-9 couplet of 275lb DL's and Chest-to-bar pullups, despite doing DL's all the time, it was just a bit too heavy for him. He knew it was close to his breaking point, but wanted to do it anyhow.
But glad to hear you're ok, that'd freak the heck out of me. I had a near brush with Rhabdo myself (probably had a mild case) when I did Angie after doing strength most of the summer. Couldn't put my arms above my head, hurt like no other to move 'em, felt crappy, couldn't easily fully extend my arms, etc... PT and massage therapist helped clear most of the crap out for a few hours (that hurt like crap while they were doing it though), but it promptly came back again after that few hours.
Don't take this the wrong way but you've been around for a while and I've seen you on the boards. It's pretty well undersood what exercises may not be a good idea if you aren't fully conditioned.. Did it cross your mind prior to the WOD that it may not be a good idea? Or did you think you were 'good to go' becuase of your PR's and such.
Just wondering...there's only about 4 or so people at our box that I would even think about letting do that many GHD situps in a WOD...
And Matt's right...mild case of Rhabdo for myself at the regional...put me out of commission for a few weeks...Finished under the time limit though with :30 to spare!!
Glad you're okay.

Re: The couch thread
GHR sit ups are one of those exercises that really are pretty much a go-to for causing rhabdo. In an old XFJ this is scoffed at, and correct form is described thoroughly. The issue is that so few people, even in the XF demo vids, do use that "proper form" that was described.
I used to do these fairly regularly, since I liked the stretch and the soreness that came with them. I think there are much better ways to work the abs than them, and much safer especially for trainees who are getting less resilient over time.
