A poorly told mediocre story set in an amazingly rendered fantastic world. Without getting into the politics of the film, the story is pretty cookie cutter and populated by caricatures instead of characters. Wished some of the time spent on the special effects had been put into writing and acting. Sigourney Weaver txted in her performance.
Judging from the rest of the crowd, most everyone was underwhelmed. There were a few forced laughs at some hackneyed jokes. A lot of the kids seemed unable to endure the length of the feature. If you bring the kids, definitely forgo the previews.
The CGI was not distracting at all and very well done. I did not see it in 3D; I find most 3D effects to be distracting.
Was it worth the hyped $750,000,000? I dunno. I am still trying to decide if it was worth the $18 matinee ticket I purchased. Probably not.

I just got done watching it in 3D at the IMax. I can't argue with Norm but my opinion is softer. A predictable story but told in such a fantastic way. I guess I missed the briefing on 3D. They actually handed us a pair of rubberized, full-framed glasses and after a few minutes for I guess my brain to get it together I was fucking mesmerized. It may be a bitch to see it at an IMax but I highly recommend you try to do so if you go see it.

Out of your mind. Avatar is a better film than Star Wars but will not have .00234% the impact culturally or economically as Stars Wars did. Also Avatar thematically resembles Star Wars in almost no way. The Harry Potter franchise is the closest thing to Stars Wars if you look at its themes and its cultural and economic impact.Dave Chesser wrote:The Star Wars of this generation.

Re: Avatar
Saw it yesterday. Pretty visually spectacular. The fact that the story isn't fantastic seems like a cop-out, given it's a James Cameron movie and he makes major, major hits without amazing stories. Sam Worthington was very good, though his accent seemed to be all over the place at times.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Haven't seen it yet, but the idea of lifeless bodies occupying avatars is indeed one future for our youth. Look forward to watching.Dave Chesser wrote:I loved it. The Star Wars of this generation.

This. The 3D is the most amazing shit I've ever seen -- straight up.Shapecharge wrote:I just got done watching it in 3D at the IMax. I can't argue with Norm but my opinion is softer. A guy at Techshop told me that it contains a "sweet" scene in which a guy in a battle exoskeleton whips out a Bowie and fights some monster or other.

Plot details match Ben Bova's The Winds of Altair amazingly well.

Fucking movie was great.
Eyecandy to the 10th power!
I even got into the story, it was less "Evil white man" and more "Evil Corperate Assholes and their ignorrent Gun Bunny Security cheif" and you were behind the Navei when it was time for payback.
My Son loved it, did not take a piss break the whole movie.

I liked it. The 3D experience made it unique.

Re: Avatar
Loved it, didn't want to, but I did. Damn James Cameron.
I agree that the human characters were caricatures, but I think that was sort of intended so that the viewer became attached to the blue thingies. Nav'i, whatever.

I saw a review that said it was a movie with incredible 3D effects with 1D characters and storyline.
I agree.

Finally broke down and watched it. Nobody there smelled like pee, so I guess KB wasn't there.

Re: Avatar
I enjoyed the movie, but was underwhelmed by the 3D effects. Maybe it was because I had to wear the 3D glasses over my normal glasses, but I would watch it in 2D and save a few bucks if I had to watch it again.

Re: Avatar
I am officially the last person on the planet to see it for the first time, I think. Saw it in a dollar theater that shows movies just before they hit DVD shelves, so no 3D or even super good 2D. The world he created was awesome, the story was kind of black & white. I dragged my wife with me and expected her to say, "bleh", but she really liked it.
Kind of weird in the battle scenes saying, "Yea! They just killed another...Marine? Should I be happy about this? Or is it OK because really they're Blackwater employees?"

Call it an Italian contracting firm and enjoy their Mercenary deaths as they fight for the dollar against someone fighting for their home.nafod wrote:I am officially the last person on the planet to see it for the first time, I think. Re: Avatar
Exactly. This movie is painted as pure enviro propaganda, and that's sort of correct; however, it's also about property rights. The blue people owned the land, they were offered a price for that land, and they turned the offer down. When the company then tries to take the land anyway, they become thieves and murderers.SNAKE EYES wrote: Call it an Italian contracting firm and enjoy their Mercenary deaths as they fight for the dollar against someone fighting for their home.
