TRX Suspension trainer
At the end of week 1, I have to admit I really like training on the TRX. Its more challenging than I thought it would be and it feels like I am getting a good workout. I have committed to doing the full 12 week workout program that came with it (mostly to insure that I get through the winter "on a program" instead of random shit) and we'll see.
Its definitely a tool that will go in the travel pack and the kettlebell will stay at home.

The little bit I've done with mine is good as well. I'm hoping to use this with a slightly older crowd. It should greatly increase their mobility and range of motion. Plus it might get a few to build some muscle since it doesn't look like weight training per se. Good product.

Re: TRX Suspension trainer
All this talk of the TRX has me wanting one to play around with. I like working with my rings for dips and working on various low level gymnastics stuff like L sits, MU's, etc. This seems similar but geared more toward "fitness" than a gymnastics tool adapted for home use.
My thinking right now is to do a few months of 50/20 to build some strength and muscle through the winter, then go to a higher rep/more conditioning deal during the summer. I wouldn't mind giving the TRX 12 week program a go for that.
For dips, I have my rings hanging from a generic power tower type of pull-up bar. Could you hang the TRX from that and make it work? The bar on it is about 7' high I guess.

That should work. I am using an I beam in the basement. If you decide to try it PM me and I will get you the force workout.

Old man seeking alternatives. At least I never hooked up chains or jump bands to a sandbag like dipshits video. At what point do you just walk over, stare blankly and say "ghey"? Ever show him what a barbell was? He might like that. Oldschool.

It is an interesting phenomenon up there.tough old man wrote:Old man seeking alternatives. At least I never hooked up chains or jump bands to a sandbag like dipshits video. The first couple times it occurred I looked over and was like WTF. Now it is just commonplace. He's always into some crazy shit (nutrition and massage and shit too).
And to make it more interesting when I first met him he was still a strongman competitor and did legit strength work. Of course he was going at strongman naturally which will be a failed proposition for anyone who attempts it IMO.
Between him and I we have nearly everything you could want for strength training up at the gym (Sorinex yoke, axle, Slater log, Inch DB, misc. bars...hell, I have a 70lb sledgehammer). What can I say? He is strange.

I'm liking the suspension training. It's a nice addition or changeup. Great for traveling too.

Re: TRX Suspension trainer
Thanks T.O.M. I'm definately going to get a TRX to try out for myself. It looks like a great way to train the small groups I train as well, so I'm wanting to give it a thorough trial this summer. I'd love to go through the force workout to have a real program to follow.tough old man wrote:That should work. I am using an I beam in the basement. I hope the GDG 10th configuration training device looks like this.

There's a seat that goes between the straps, but it costs extra.

Looks like an interesting piece of equipment in that one can vary the load to increase/ decrease the level of difficulty.
What is the 12 week program like? Can you give a few samples or is it in your training log?

Bottom line, a training protocol isn't validated until it's proven in competition. As far as I know, there aren't any remarkable athletes who train in CrossFit. Case closed. Either produce or STFU.--Kraj

Too big for conventional e-mail, you have to use something like yousendit.com EDIT: actually it's only 18.5MB. So should work.

Re: TRX Suspension trainer
Update:
6 weeks through the Force workout and I still like using the TRX. The workout is actually getting progressively more difficult every 2 weeks and its to a point of being challenging both strength and cardio wise. A little more size on the arms from the extra work and the pump from the workout is huge.

Alright , its warm enough to move the gym outside so last night I skipped the start of week 9 and went to some traditional barbell work to see where I am at.
Front Squats. Stayed light but it felt heavy @225 1,2,3 ladders X 3.
Sandbag (85 lbs) lunges 7L/7R x3 felt easy but I have been doing a ton of lunges on the force routine
kb swings 36kg bell 2 sets of 15. Not bad at all.
then did the TRX core workout as a finisher.
Overall I think I lost a little 1RM strength but gained endurance.
I will test upper body stuff next.
The TRX does stand out as a midsection training device and I enjoy using it. For deployed fitness I think it has its place, same for older or new trainees

I have found that it works well as a foot snare if hung on monkey bars in one's gym by a maniac who likes to hang shit all over shit.

From what I have seen, your profesionally trained TRX ass uses it well.
