Re: The couch thread
There is some serious andro (and most likely not a whole lot of menstrual cycles) going on in that post, WGM.
For all you @F ladies reading this, sitting at sub-15% bodyfat, not menstruating, and thinking you are the shit...consider this a public service announcement. The osteoporosis in your future will likely be by your own doing.

You are welcome in advance. The Female Athlete Triad: Quick Facts
Published: March 23, 2007
The female athlete triad is a set of symptoms that produces damaging physical and psychological consequences. It is comprised of three linked medical conditions that occur in sequence: disordered eating, menstrual irregularities and premature osteoporosis.
The components of the female athlete triad are related in the following way:
1. Disordered eating leads to inadequate nutrition.
2. Poor nutrition directly affects the production of hormones such as estrogen.
3. Because estrogen plays an important role in bone development, a lack of the hormone leads to weakened bones and significantly increases the prevalence of injury.
The triad is observed most often in girls who participate in sports in which performance is scored subjectively, a low bodyweight is emphasized, body contour-revealing clothing is required for competition, weight categories are used for participation and a prepubescent body is considered optimal for performance.
Disordered Eating
Anorexia Nervosa—A condition of self-starvation—Includes the following symptoms:
# Body weight at or below 15% of normal weight for age and height
# A refusal to maintain a minimally normal body weight.
# Intense and irrational fear of gaining weight or becoming fat.
# Restricting Subtype: Uses dieting, fasting or excessive exercise as the primary means for weight loss.
# Binge-Eating/Purging Subtype: Engages in binge eating, purging or both.
Bulimia Nervosa—Binge eating and then purging— Includes the following symptoms:
# Those with bulimia often retain a normal bodyweight.
# Episodes of uncontrollable and rapid binge eating.
# Overwhelming feelings of guilt, anxiety and depression after binging
# Non-Purging Subtype: After binging, fasts or exercises excessively.
# Purging Subtype: After binging, engages in self-induced vomiting or uses laxatives and/or diuretics.
Menstrual Irregularities (Amenorrhea and Oligomenorrhea)
Primary amenorrhea is characterized by a pre-adolescent who hasn't had a menstrual period by the age of 16 or has gone two years following the development of secondary sex characteristics without menarche. Eating disorders may lead to this delay. Secondary amenorrhea is when menstruation ceases for three months or longer in a female who has previously had normal cycles. This is part of the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa. Oligomenorrhea is when the menstrual cycle occurs at irregular, erratic intervals. Secondary amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea occur in bulimics due to undernourishment.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a dangerous disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone. Disordered eating results in a lack of calcium and vitamin D—two nutrients that are imperative for healthy bone growth in young women. If primary or secondary amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea occur and hormone levels are reduced, bone mass will also be decreased. Research has shown that some active young athletes with amenorrhea have skeletons similar to 50- or even 70-year-old women.
How prevalent is the Female Athlete Triad among the female athlete population?
Researchers estimate that between 15-62% of the female athletic population display disordered eating behaviors.
The extent of amenorrhea among female athletes falls between 3-66%, depending on the definition that is used.
Preventing and Treating the Female Athlete Triad
Preventing the triad can only happen through proper education—coaches, athletic trainers, parents and athletes must be well informed about the female athlete triad.
The female athlete triad can be prevented and treated in the following ways:
# Mandate annual screening of the triad for female athletes/dancers
# Mandate preseason education
# Mandate education for parents of athletes who are 18 years of age or younger
# Mandate education for coaches and athletic trainers
# Clearly define referral guidelines
# Clearly define treatment guidelines
# Clearly define sports participation guidelines when symptoms of the triad become present
# Promote healthy stress-management behaviors and tactics
# Promote community awareness of the triad through educational programs

Gary is this the post-rehab Couch we can expect to see more of?
I don't like Coach's attitude on the science video.
Uh-oh.
Don't forget to introduce yourself on the FSF, andrew.I'm a coach, affiliate member, CF competitor and huge fan but I don't like this whole approach of dismissing and belittling everybody who doesn't drink the kool aid.
Crossfit is brilliant and I love it. But we're not the only approach to fitness and health. The most important thing is for more people to exercise and move better, more often.
Just because other trainers or exercise scientists disagree with or approach, doesn't make them wrong...or idiots. Insulting them belittles us, not them.

@fit is teetering on the precipice of a reformation. The old guard don't like that, which is world-class pointing-out-the-obvious, but there's not a hell of a lot that they can do about it beyond their usual character-assassinating antics. It's Founder's Dilemma: Much has been said in the tech media about how Zuckerberg despite founding FB may not be the ideal boss to head it up going forward, and that's a common issue as businesses grow.
It ain't a birthday party any more.
I doubt that Couch will jump, I think he'll get pushed.

In response to someone wondering why it was worthwhile to learn double-unders, XF reveals themselves as the Anti-Occam:
Therein lies the genius of the CrossFit movements. The harder the movement is to perform, the more aspects of fitness required to perform it.
A novice is someone who keeps asking himself if he is a novice. An intermediate is someone who is sick of training with weak people and an advanced person doesn't give a shit anymore. - Jim Wendler
Re: The couch thread
Then why in the holy goatfuck is the "sumo deadlift highpull" one of their "foundational" movements? And isn't "ease of learning" one of the reasons they were fucking about with the "medicine ball squat"? Or was it a med ball powerclean?stosh wrote:In response to someone wondering why it was worthwhile to learn double-unders, XF reveals themselves as the Anti-Occam:

PB, the problem is you are looking for a logical reason for what they do. If you look at the long view (remember paralletes and how your gym wasn't nearly complete unless you had a set?) CF equipment and methodology is derived from Couch going on a peyote trip and programming whatever the Lizard King tells him to.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

I only made it a few seconds into the Glassman video - the logic of "I know I'm right because I've looked at the science and I'm right" is about to make my head explode.

Even that makes more sense than sharing a fucking barbell for a unilateral exercise. Curious if they plan on sharing curls next.

Also no one wants to discuss the science and evidence with them. No one!milosz wrote:I only made it a few seconds into the Glassman video - the logic of "I know I'm right because I've looked at the science and I'm right" is about to make my head explode.
If you have any criticism of @fit you're just jealous and an idiot and deep inside you know they're right.
Couch has become a Creationist.
On that note, there were a couple of @fitters at my gym last night. I could tell because one was tall, had no muscle, and was sporting chucks while nearly dying with triples of 90kg squats. But he was using the rower and shit-form power cleans too, so the Elite Athlete card was in play.

Re: The couch thread
This is completely, staggeringly fucking egregious. I wish I could say it baffles me that anybody could listen to this rhetoric and swoon, but it doesn't; most sermonizing of this sort functions similarly. Its ability to sway is in the style of the speech and the charisma (such as it is) of the presenter, not in the content.milosz wrote:I only made it a few seconds into the Glassman video - the logic of "I know I'm right because I've looked at the science and I'm right" is about to make my head explode.
But seriously, Glassman's megalomania is reaching almost pathological levels if he truly believes this crap. He's essentially saying "We're not only right, every sane and intelligent person knows we're right, and everyone who disagrees is an idiot (and a filthy evil fuck, incidentally) -- in fact, we're so right, it's not even possible to formulate a counter-argument, so if you disagree you're retarded a priori."
In short, res ipsa loquitur. Only three categories of people use this type of argument -- logicians, religious zealots, and idiots. You have two guesses which ones apply here and you'll need them both.
