Quack Attack wrote:From all the commentary on the Gaymes, it appears that many diehard Kool-Aid drinkers:

  • See and dislike the metcon obsession (there wasn't one max lift in the comp)
  • Wonder why the couch can't make an appearance
  • Thought that not having a crash mat under a 20-foot rope climb in the very last event was dangerously stupid, apparently enough for some to walk out
  • Noticed that attendance appeared to be down
On a high note, the Highland Games I participated in this weekend had more athletes and attendance than ever before. No @F shirts (or shirtless dooshes) were noted.
I didn't watch any of it this weekend because a) I had shit to do, including actually exercising rather than watching other people do it and b) The videos will be online forever, so what's the rush?

Instead I got all my Games news from the Tweets and FB updates of Team Gorilla. Despite reports that Couch was out there shmoozing, I haven't seen anybody post a picture with him yet, but it's still early.

Overall, people enjoyed the show, and gave a lot of support to their friends who were competing. Showing up is 90% and you've got to hand it to people who walk the walk, regardless.

The general criticisms from people I know echo what Quack said. I kind of get the vibe that HQ is becoming less and less relevant to it's own community, and if it disappeared tomorrow the affiliate community would carry on with their lives after a *brief* period of mourning.

I watched a little Saturday night at work and had it on all day at home Sunday. The only thing that concerned me was the high risk nature of the 12' wall and the 20' rope climb. That there were no epic fails was fortunate.

Well, one year is about the apex of a Cultfitters "athletic" career. It's long enough to get some seriously good metabolic adaptations but not quite long enough to have worked up a good set of overuse/retard injuries.

The burning question of course is, did he train exclusively using HQ's mainpage programming??? And if not, was he really doing crossfit? Or is HQ still arguing that all metabolic / crosstraining = crossfit? I hope it's the latter. For legal reasons. But that's old news.

I'm curious and don't want to actually watch anything for clarification: in the workouts for teh Games, they had one that specified "squat snatches" with some light weight for a lot of reps. Did they really expect people to catch it that low (or ride it down), or would they be fine with power snatches (the inevitable result of having such a light weight)? I ask because this sort of specificity came up in the horrendously stupid @Fit/USAW competition as well, and I find it horribly wasteful and silly to force people to catch that low with such a silly weight when you're trying to do something for time (laying aside the absurdity of doing olympic lifts for time).

Yes, it has to include the squat because to them, its the range of motion of the movement that makes it a functional exercise. So, basically its a power snatch with an overhead squat. Just like their squat cleans, power cleans with a front squat. They don't actually emphasize a proper pull under the bar. Its not important. But, I think that might have been covered about four hundred pages ago.

For the games the "squat snatch" had to be one movement or it didn't count. So you could power snatch it, but you had to go into the squat without a pause. If you paused before the squat it didn't count.

It really doesn't make any sense. If your strong enough to get the reps with a power snatch then it should count. And if you absolutely must do the squat portion what does it matter if there's a pause or not.

The most retarded exercise award has to go to the push ups where you had to lift your hands off the ground at the bottom.

Also good call on covering the ground with black mats. I'm sure that helped raise the temperature a few degrees.

That does sound absurd

I can't believe I'm actually defending them, but that does make it a little easier to judge. One of the things I hate about the idea of @Fit competitions is ease of cheating at some of the movements they are judging, but this makes a pushup that much easier to judge: hands off ground at bottom, fully up at top. They could even start doing "kipping" pushups to make it go faster and increase work capacity.

I learned how to count push-ups in Jr. High gym class. You make a fist and put it under their chest. It's not rocket science.

It also encourages breast implants, so that's change I can believe in.

That's crappy and impractical. Ranks up there with the stupid suggestions @Fitters are coming up with. viz: One of them suggested that they test maximal strength by having them take 7 minutes to get a 3RM power clean. #-o That's not as stupid as 90 seconds for max shoulder-to-overhead, but there are just too many things wrong with it.

What does anyone want to bet that @F has a marketing package that they give to potential sponsors that says: "@F: Forging Elite Consumers"?
