This is much more than just a "free" website at this point. There are 2000+ affiliates and even more trainers that now depend on Crossfit. Affiliates have invested $1000s into their business and trainers have invested valuable time and money into associating themselves with Crossfit. Crossfit has a responsibility to be a professional outfit. This has grown beyond a few people working out in a garage or getting together at some ranch for a weekend of competing and drinking beer.
Just like a few juvenile kids in HS doing their silly things who then grow up and enter the work force where these kind of infantile things are not accepted, Crossfit has graduated and needs to act its "age".
Affiliates and the corresponding trainers can't just walk away if they don't like it. There's too much invested at this point. You are now messing with people's means of earning a living.
If this nonsense stops here, then great. But, I am concerned that this is the equivalent of an immature "no I dare you", "no I double dare you", "no I double DOG dare you". This is obviously a picture in a series and my concern is, "O.K. What are these clowns going to do next?". HQ you've made your silly little point. Now it's time to grow up and think about the 2,000+ affiliates and all the trainers out there that are counting on your professionalism. You're playing with fire and you know what they say about that.
Crossfit is at a critical point where it can move beyond some fringe phenomenon and become a real player in the fitness world. The Reebok sponsorship is obviously evidence of this. How will this help Crossfit's true goals? How will this picture and others like it help Crossfit overcome some of the negative impressions that are still out there? The answer is it won't. So stop it and be professional.

First off I'm sold on Crossfit workouts. At 48 I'm in the best shape of my life and my body performs better than it ever has. Having said that in light of the picture posted today there are a couple points that I would like to address. First off I realize Crossfit is not a Christian based group so I'm not "SHOCKED" if I see a picture that seems lacking in discretion, I'm just not sure why it's there. I do agree with with Josh #207 and Michael in #228, if it's prohibited on the street we probably shouldn't view it on the site. I'm sure you can find plenty of other sites that carry this type of material. Chris is right in #110 that one picture doesn't change 10 years of free workouts, my main concern is where the current trend in pictures is going, and I'm still not sure what this has to do with fun or elite fitness.

To me it looks like team competition trumped editorial wisdom in this case. The problem isn't really the photo (which doesn't offend me), but rather the inconsistency of labeling and the lack of clear labeling.

This picture is toeing the line of WFS. Perhaps it was an unfounded assumption that the main feed was supposed to be WFS, but it was one that I had nevertheless.

I, like many others, have the crossfit WOD stream queued up in email and feed reader, and I would prefer they stay WFS. This isn't because I, personally, am offended but rather because of the possibility of a "mixed audience".

I am fine with the feed as it is. Myself and my wife find the pictures fun, funny, and inspirational (even some of the edgy ones), but as soon as I am sharing with other people (read mom, conservative friends, etc), it gets complicated.

If there is an informational way that I can break things into "channels", then I will use my tech skills to do so. All that would require from CFHQ is either a WFS tag on WODs that are WFS, or a NWFS tag on those that aren't. Feed scripts could do the rest.

Whether the main feed is raw and unfiltered and there is a separate "WFS" feed, or if the main feed is WFS and there is an "NWFS" feed makes no difference to me. It would just be nice to have the choice for when I am in "mixed company".

That said, given the ultimatum of "put up or shut up", I will gladly shut up and continue benefiting from the crossfit WOD and just take it on myself to preview the photos before sharing to a mixed audience. I am not going to demand a change to something that is freely given and a wonderful resource. If CFHQ chooses to give me tags on posts, great, but I don't demand it nor would I have a leg to stand on if I did.

Whether it's appropriate to post this kind of photo is debatable. What isn't debatable is that it's been made crystal clear that HQ holds itself to different standards than its heavily moderated posters, members, and affiliate owners. Tasteless, maybe; hypocritical, definitely.

I agree with 408, I have over $75,000 and four years of my life promoting elite fitness through CrossFit. Most of these people saying its ok to post pictures like this probably have nothing more invested in CrossFit than their board shorts, innov 8 shoes and high socks protecting you fragile shins. My family counts on my business to eat paleo, and survive. Its unfortunate. Maybe they can have a new cert, how to CrossFit Nude and all you people can put your money where your mouth is and pay a grand or two to find out the proper way to workout with your junk out.

I've been doing crossfit for years. I've noticed recently the website was pushing the envelope a little. I've also been a little disappointed with many of the workouts. I've lived crossfit for quite awhile and introduced many of my friends to it. But This picture today just sealed it for me, as of today i'm no longer a crossfit supporter.
