I choose to kill people with kindness. Oh, I should also mention "kindness" is the name of my samurai sword.

Except that finishing is a loser goal. "Oh, my goal is to finish!" is what fat middle aged ladies doing the 5k WALK To End Breast Cancer say.

If you're going to run, RUN. Finishing is a result of showing up AT ALL, not something to be aspired to.

Even if you're not in medal contention finish strong, and race like you fucking mean it.

Well of course, that's obvious but first you have to finish to win and BMack does neither...

but gets paid a shitload to be a SME. god bless america

Which is just downright un fuckin real. Past sme people at least for the most part could do the do or at least coach others to. DNF has got to be a better bullshitter than the couch himself.

WGM,

I encourage bacchanalia before posting.

Even if the only thing you can beat is your score from last time, do that. Not everyone can win everything. Find something you like and train the hell out of it. I'll never win Nationals in judo, but I will leave a trail littered with the opponents I defeat. Savages don;t try to finish, savages try to win then cannibalize their opponents.

I think the goal of finishing, depending on the event, is admirable.

Finishing a 100 mile race in oppressive heat & humidity is a huge goal. This past weekend, a buddy of mine did that in the Burning River 100, took him 29hours45minutes. Needless to say, he's not trained by CFE.

I have another buddy who has run the Alaska UltraSport something like 7 times, and never finished. Finishing that race is indeed winning.

The ultra world is, I think, a bit different from other athletic events.

But any way you slice it, a DNF is not a win.

Ultra is indeed a whole other, strange world.

Back in the regular world, if Al Roker can "finish" a marathon, anyone can. Not much of a goal, IMO.

The sled push event sure made for great photos.

By the way, tomorrow's Friday update on Team Gorilla is going to be, how you say, a little excessive. You may want to hydrate all day and catch small naps in order to conserve your energy for the Gorillastorm to come.

Most marathons have time limits and terrain generous enough that most anyone can finish if they are not diseased or paralyzed. See Oprah.

In most ultras beyond 50k the time limits and terrain are such that you need to be somewhat prepared if you want to finish officially. A select handful of them have extremely aggressive cutoffs so that finishing officially is actually pretty hard.
I think 'just finishing' is a fine goal for to start and many coaches such as Powell recommend this.

I just did some quick stats and the national average for finishing a 100 miler is somewhere around 56.2%. I don't feel like doing stats for 50 miler or 50k but I would assume it's more like 85% and 95% for those.

But if you want to call yourself an SME you have to have done one of these:
- done some impressive things yourself
- gotten other people to do impressive things

MacKenzie has done neither. Worst of all is that he criticizes anyone who doesn't do exactly what he does when it comes to training. He's almost worse than Glassman in that respect because he's actually singled out athletes by name and say they're doing x incorrectly.

To sum this whole thing up:
MacKenzie completed two 100 milers in 2006 and 2007 (with times that would not turn any heads), where he fully admitted he was doing a ton of mileage and it caused him to become so weak he couldn't squat 100 lbs or some exaggerated BS like that. Then, he invented CFE in 2008, stopped doing mileage, started criticizing athletes, made ridiculous claims about him and his program, and hasn't finished a race since. And he dresses like a moron.

Eleeet.

Will Ferrell, 2003 Boston Marathon (3:56:12)
George W. Bush, 1993 Houston Marathon (3:44:52)
A local guy her has CFE classes at his "box" and runs all these shit-talking ads about running less and getting faster. He ran a 3:55 in Chicago last year and his main trainer ran a 2:46 half marathon....they are pleased with the reults?!

I hate to change the subject but this story is making the rounds, and must be shared.
"Apparently Lugo and Glassman had been on the outs for a bit and he was off the sauce so they started back up. In Montana they got prettly blasted...It came out that Greg had to get skin grafs on his arm because Lisa took a huge bite out of it"
