If you read Lt. Grossman's book "On Killing" you might come away with the impression that the fellows in WW I and II fared better psychologically than soldiers in more recent conflicts. I have no idea but I certainly respect those who have served our country regardless of the conflict. Grossman's book is worth a read for sure. Boardwalk is the best show on tv right now by a mile.baffled wrote:I think you make a good point, Shape. I have no experience in the military, but understand that each generation has had their warriors who have come home with quite a bit of psychological trauma. Yet, it would seem to me that the magnitude of WWI and WWII had some serious heaviness for those young men.
I mean, didn't WWI wipe out almost an entire generation of young men in Europe? Imagining the memories and the burden you would feel by being one of the survivors. I think they probably do pretty good with Jimmy and his buddy. Hell, think about if that was real instead of a fictional TV show. You make it out relatively unscathed with a bum leg and a roughed up psyche, but you're okay. You befriend a fellow vet who's missing half his face. The world may look a little different after that.
I love this show.

I have had the book for a long time but never finished it. I'll give it another go. Why did he think it was easier for them? Because they were welcomed home...fighting for god and country etc.?
Re: Boardwalk Empire
This is my current favorite show also. But I am 2 episodes behind. Must catch up.

Well how fucking crazy was that episode. You never see the garotte used much particularly to that extend...fuck I felt I was doing it. Plus a bunch of other far out shit going down. I'm going to be a best crestfallen when the season's over.

How bad ass was it when that dude's fingers lopped off?

That I would say is an example of commitment. Now let's give Margaret a small break...she just wants some dick thrown up in her by one of her own people. Meanwhile back at the ranch, our favorite Revenue Agent is twisting tighter and tighter...I'm waiting for him to snap and start mowing fuckers down with a drum-fed tommy gun.
Re: Boardwalk Empire
Who wouldn't want to be that Irishman? He goes and drops some traitor (couldn't really understand what they were talking about other than some feud), then bangs one out with his boss' lady.
Well, maybe I could do without garroting someone, but banging Nucky's chick wouldn't be the worst thing to happen in a day.

Besides Jimmy and maybe Frankenstein, the Irishman is my favorite character.
I fully expect Nelson to go postal or off himself.
What a great show.

Frankenstein! Hilarious. Glad someone was having the same problem I was having with the Irish convo before the knife versus piano wire fight. Thought I needed a fuckin' Whisper 2000 to beam that shit in. No kidding...the Irishman is awesome. Gets in a Mexican standoff with the sniper, bangs the super hot housekeeper and Nucky's girl and settles a debt with someone it looks like needed killing. I would have definitely been a cunt on that deal. This show exposes so many holes in my education. I would love to know more about the Irish situation. Still haven't finished watching the three part Ken Burns documentary on Prohibition.

I missed the episode. Was there some full frontal in that scene? She's purty to look art.baffled wrote:...but banging Nucky's chick wouldn't be the worst thing to happen in a day.

The chick who really really does it for me, like I would consider leaving my wife for her, is Jimmy's mom. There's something about that woman that clicks from head to toe. Not her odd Oedipal character but her.

Whats up with her telling Jimmy's wife that she used to "suck his wee-wee" or whatever she said. That creeped me out a little.

I think she said she actually "kissed" it but sufficiently odd to weird me out as well. I think the story is she had him when she was only 13. But regardless, she is fucking gorgeous.

Re: Boardwalk Empire
My schedule's been messed up, so I've missed the last two episodes except for short segments during the week. Caught the last 15 minutes of the most recent. Sorry to see my favorite lesbian bite the dust. Damn...more hate and discontent inbound.

Shit's getting out of control. Good episode and a lot of directions things can go.
BTW, what the fuck is going on with Jimmy's mom?

That bitch is nuttier than a fucking fruitcake.
And Jimmy is seeming more and more unstable as well as seeming to not be able to handle the power he's been given.

Re: Boardwalk Empire
This show is great! On so many levels. Loving the Gillian/jimmy craziness. Nucky appears to have shared too much business information with Margaret. Bite him in the ass?
Re: Boardwalk Empire
Season finale was very good. Jimmy went out like a man. Sad to see him go, but like he said he already died in the trenches.

I am completely and utterly blown the fuck away. That last episode was golden fucking magic. There's no way I could have handled Homeland and Empire at the same time. I'll be digesting this for awhile. Well said Monty.

Why are we not discussing this?
Re: Boardwalk Empire
Still processing it.
I had let Boardwalk Empire get overshadowed by the masterpiece of Homeland, but the final episode was a step above the rest of season 2.
Very interested to see how they go forward in light of what happened in the season finale.

Re: Boardwalk Empire
I read an interview in Entertainment Weekly (I think) with Terence Winter about the finale and season 3...very interesting. After I read it the finale made sense. When you think about it, what other course of action could there be? Jimmy had so much weight on him dying was the only possible relief. Looks like we haven't seen the last of our favorite, tightly-wound Revenue agent. Al's character will get more air time and I believe they're going to introduce Bugsy Siegel. The sniper is still involved. Don't know what's up with our IRA pussy gettin' garotte killer.
