It warms my heart to see this kind of rancor on IGX. It's been a while. At any rate, this is why I never gamble on fights; my heart gets in the way of my head. Emotion tells me Sonnen, but reason an empiricism both argue for Silva.

Chael has the perfect style to beat Silva, and he coompletely dominated Silva for 4.5 rounds in their first fight.

Why would anyone count him out?

As to Silva not looking like Silva in their first fight, it's b/c Chael didn't let Silva be Silva. Chael applied pressure from the first bell and never let up. Silva thrives on guys who bounce around and feel him out for a minute or two. It gives him time to see their responses, their setups, etc., then he smokes them ON THE FEET. Chael did none of that and took Silva waaaay out of his comfort zone.

I attended a Silva seminar a while back and he was super cool, humble and actually really hands on. I thought he was a total class act (so was Minatauro, who was also at the seminar).

I think it was a combination of factors in that first fight to be honest...

regardless of the reason, Silva was off in a huge way in that first fight... he wasn't aggressive in the least and played defensive for over 4 rounds. If he didn't catch Sonnen, he would have lost on points.

Sonnen got skills, but a focused and aggressive Silva is something else...

They are replaying the fight for free on ufc.com if you haven't seen it in awhile. I think your assessment is just wrong. Silva TRIED to be aggressive like he always does but watch his other fights: he never comes out aggressive! He throws a few things to see how people will react, he moves around to see what the other guy does...and his typical opponents "respect" him/are scared and so they give him a few minutes of free viewing time, sometimes they spend the whole first round feeling him out.

And then when Silva has their riddle solved, he starts doing the hand rolling thing and you know it's game time. Several seconds later, his opponent is usually KTFO.

But Sonnen came right him and actually dropped him in the first. Then smothered him on the ground. The beginning of the next few rounds, Silva came out of his corner aggressivly looking to turn the tide and get back to his striking game. didn't work.

I thikn Silva got caught by surprise in that first round. Then he tried to turn up the heat whenever he was on his feet but he couldn't do it b/c he couldn't stop Sonnen's takedowns.

The canard about Silva being off in the first fight is weak. Fact is, a nasty aggressive wrestler is too much for many technical fighters to handle, especially reactive fighters like Silva. I suspect spidey learnt his lesson, let us pray not.

This. Like Proto said, Silva went at Sonnen HARD at the beginning of the 2nd and most of the other rounds, but couldn't stay off his back. Also, all one needs to do is watch the documentary Like Water, which covers the buildup to the fight, to know there was NO RIB INJURY
