Jones probably should have taken the fight, but the anger at him is out of proportion (aside from people who lost money in the deal). It's Dana's fault the rest of the card was too pathetic to even put on free TV. I was going to pay for UFC 151, but I wasn't happy about getting the UFC equivalent of a Pacquiao/Mayweather card (one real event, whole bunch of shit no one cares about).

He is in no way shape of form their most marketable guy Ever. He's their best fighter but supremely lame as a marketing figure. Ugly fuckers like Lesnar, Ortiz and Couture beat the living shit out of him from a marketing perspective. Furthermore, taking money out the fans pockets who were banking on traveling to this show? He's a talented fighter, no doubt, but he's going to be the heel for a long time on this one. I hope Machida gets extremely lucky.

The fact is, Jones isn't nearly the draw you make him out to be. Even Brock Lesnar announcing he's coming back to the UFC would blow Jones' PPV numbers out of the water. Not to mention guys like Anderson Silva. Compare Anderson Silva's performance against Forrest Griffin to Jon Jones' performance against Rampage. Most people would much rather pay for 3 minutes of total lopsided domination than they would to watch 5 rounds of Jones ducking guys for the decision.

Barring catastrophe, the UFC only gets bigger and bigger for quite a while - a young American champion (hell, a young black American champion) who has a chance to dominate is a better marketing opportunity than Couture or Ortiz were (simply because of the size of the UFC in their heyday), Lesnar remains a fluke for bringing in WWE knuckle-draggers.

They said he was gonna be the 1st or next guy to hold the belt in two divisions simultaneously. Where is he now? Does he even fight on the main cards any more or is he working night shift at Wendy's in San Diego?

Then there was Machida, who kicked a few asses in convincing karate style and everyone started to claim he was invincible. After Shogun broke his spirit along with a bunch of his bones, he's never been the same.

Guys don't have prolonged peaks in this sport any more. It's evolved over the past decade to a point where it's much more competitive than it used to be. It's going to be sooner rather than later that someone studies the film on Jon Jones and develops a strategy to beat him.

For the record...I think Jones physically is aall that you coudl hope for in a fighter @ 205 but the sport's lifecycle is way too short for even a blip like this. There will be no more Hendos or Coutures at LH...Hell there probably won't even be a Matt Lindland for quite some time.
