Let's Compare:

Anthos Deal -- $20 million TODAY. That will net her $17 million after taxes (long term cap. gains is 15%).

HQ Deal -- $17.5 million over 5 years, and heavily backloaded in payments. So what is the NPV (Net Present Value) of all of those future payments? If you plug HQ's numbers into an NPV calculator (http://www.calkoo.com/?lang=3&page=21), you will see that with a standard 10% discount rate, the actual NPV is only $12.55 million. Even if we are generous and use an 8% or 6% discount rate, the NPV is still only $13.36 million or $14.25 million, respectively.

For HQ's 5 year payment plan to equal the upfront money of Anthos, you would have to use an absurdly low 0.7% discount rate.

It seems that in addition to being surprisingly ignorant of all things fitness, HQ is also bad at basic math as well.

Or you could just go the common sense route and say that $17 million today is obviously worth more than $17.5 million over 5 years. Particularly when most of that money will come towards the end of the 5 years.
