If I recall, they were based more on individual browsing history than discussion topics. I doubt that even our resident shrinkologist wants to know what ads showed up on @'s screen.

It's a combination for most ad networks.

I doubt Google would be thrilled to have their Adsense ads showing up here, but if they did, a member who spent enough time browsing threads may start to see their ads shift a bit from whatever they were browsing before they were on the forum, to whatever topic themes that were found in each thread. Most other networks work similarly, but Google's tracking cookie is the best and most accurate, imo. That, and Goog's got the largest ad network.

There are some ad networks that would probably be cool to have their ads run here, but they'd pretty much all be filled with pr0n and guns I think. Not that that's a bad thing.

Finding a network that paid by impression could be a good way to boost the general fund a bit. I doubt any pay per click network would be too lucrative.

I like the option that you see ads/popups if your aren't logged in. It'd be a good way to get some backdoor revenue out of the @fit faggots that lurk.

It's not my idea. I just regurgitated it from earlier. I don't know if it will work or if it will help. But if it'll allow us to make our regular contributions and keep Mario from having to beg for money or poney up his own then it'll help.

A lot of sites require a "donation" to opt out of ads. Put them out there heavily enough and either the @fitters would stop chewing up bandwidth, or more people would kick in a few bucks to not have ads all over their screen.
