She comes crying because he slapped her and tossed her to the couch or gave her the STFU Darth Vader 1 hand choke grip and warning because she ran her mouth, berated him and then pushed him and Ill slap the other side of her face and drag her home on a leash.

Scenarios like Katrina are more likely. Being prepared to hunker down for a week or so, or to evacuate quickly, and having insurance is all the prepping you need to do. People should work on those things after they figure out how not to die of self-inflicted heart disease at 45.

More like this.

Preppers are fascinated with a disorganized chaotic breakdown of society ala Walking Dead. That's generally bullshit. People organize and align themselves very quickly in a disaster. You're inside the fence or your out. Want to really prepare for end times? Start making friends with your neighbors.

I do agree that the short term break downs due to disasters is the primary concern. I saw a bit of this after Hurricane Andrew and yes knowing what neighbors you can count on and the ones you can't is very important, especially if you live around alot of people.

Even then we saw neighbors act like animals and I backed off two snoopers with an SKS, granted this was in Broadview Florida and these were both rockmonsters from the crackhouse across the street.

And you are right, unless we have a nuclear war or a astaroid slams us, even the worst scenario would see new orders rising both locally and on a larger scale.

But you also see people go stupid durring long term blackouts so if we get a solar flair (and there is nothing far fetched or way out of odds there, we have had many in history, but there was no relience on electricity in the 1850's) things would go shitty for a long time and it could be big enough to collapse society as we know it.

People focus on the beans and bullets but they don;t focus on how they will handle a long term aftermath beyond just their family. That's stupid and short sighted.

Any animal can survive the idea is to do far more than that, the idea is to be able to rebuild, at least arounbd your community and that will take cooperation.

Kunstler's name is mostly associated with nonfiction works like The Long Emergency, a bleak prediction of what will happen when oil production no longer meets demand, and the antisuburbia polemic The Geography of Nowhere. In this novel, his 10th, he visits a future posited on his signature idea: when the oil wells start to run dry, the world economy will collapse and society as we know it will cease. Robert Earle has lost his job (he was a software executive) and family in the chaos following the breakdown. Elected mayor of Union Grove, N.Y., in the wake of a town crisis, Earle must rebuild civil society out of squabbling factions, including a cultish community of newcomers, an established group of Congregationalists and a plantation kept by the wealthy Stephen Bullock. Re-establishing basic infrastructure is a big enough challenge, but major tension comes from a crew of neighboring rednecks led by warlord Wayne Karp. Kunstler is most engaged when discussing the fate of the status quo and in divulging the particulars of daily life. Kunstler's world is convincing if didactic: Union Grove exists solely to illustrate Kunstler's doomsday vision. Readers willing to go for the ride will see a frightening and bleak future.

No but I did just read Rawles' Patriots, A Novel of the Comming Collapse and it was pretty good and had alot of good points, some that echo what has been discussed in this thread.

Funny show. Most of them are obese so this is way more apt. They want to survive Doomsday but they cannot survive a sprint to the mailbox.

For what it's worth, I figure I have a decent shot at weathering something bad. We keep about 2 weeks worth of dry store and potable water, batteries, and lamp fuel on hand in case of storms or some other disaster that cuts out the grid. We also hunt, small garden, and can some of our own food. I keep a fully stocked med kit with IV and airway equipment as well as a small stockpile of antibiotics and other emergency meds. I also keep a decent stockpile of 22 long and .410 ammo for general hunting purposes.

Growing up out in the middle of Alabama poor as dirt, I am not a stranger to roughing it and hunting, fishing, foraging and trapping for food. There was a time when most of the meat we ate came from my dad and grandpa hunting/fishing. I know how to reload my own ammo given the supplies and I am also decent at making stock removal metal tools.

All of this without being a nutjob just having hobbies like hunting, fishing, and knife making as well as just being a responsible adult.

Yes. I've got an extra refrigerator in the garage with extra beverages. A 5 gallon gas can in the extra garage that is usually at least half full (or half empty, depending on your outlook on life). I've got cast iron skillets in case I need to camp out, and two pretty big bags of jasmine rice which cooks up very light and fragrant. Also, as long as I can get wi-fi access, I can continue p//ning f@gs online well into the apocalopyse.

One of these types has a blog somebody posted here years ago. 100# overweight survivalist. Constant financial distress. The scenarios they envision always involve the complete uselessness of money, because otherwise it would be impossible to justify the $$$ they spend on their hobby rather than actual preparation for real-life bad times.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.
