Just spent most of a week on an island with no dog catcher and a pretty good number of strays, who are only distinguishable from the dogs with owners by the lack of collar, since only the ex-pats use leashes.
All dogs were perfectly behaved, no acting up with people or each other, and if you told somebody one was yours they'd remark on how "well trained" it was. It amazes me how good we are in this country at fucking up our dogs.

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

By "an island" I assume somewhere outside of the US?
Why were the dogs better there?
What do they do vs us fucked-up Americans?
Did you defile your new wife anally?

I was in Caye Caulker, Belize. The difference in behavior was mainly the absence of neurotic/goofy ones. They don't jump on people, don't freak out, don't beg for food, etc.BucketHead wrote:Hey Shaf, try a little less obtuseness.Grandpa's Spells wrote:Just spent most of a week on an island with no dog catcher and a pretty good number of strays, who are only distinguishable from the dogs with owners by the lack of collar, since only the ex-pats use leashes.

I saw similar dogs in South America (stray dogs waiting for a stoplight to change) and Europe, so I think it's generally that they don't reward or encourage behaviors in dogs that we do.

Re: Positive Reinforcement and Positive Punishment
When I was in India I saw something similar. There were plenty of stray dogs living among the people but I saw very few living with the people. It was just two separate species in the same place at the same time with little obvious direct interaction between them. Kind of like people over here relate to random birds in their back yards. What took it to another level for me was the fact that there were stray dogs and stray people living on the same streets.Grandpa's Spells wrote:I was in Caye Caulker, Belize. Do those countries ever allow you to turn right on red? My dog gets confused by that because he can't read the signs.Grandpa's Spells wrote:...stray dogs waiting for a stoplight to change

Re: Positive Reinforcement and Positive Punishment
Did the solution to this get posted? Asking for a person with a puppy who happens to be me.Bogatir X wrote:PR & PP are really for teaching desirable behaviors reliably. Here is an example everyone with a friendly dog can relate to:BucketHead wrote:Nappy: Do you have this dog training distilled to the point where you could give us newbies advice on how to approach ANY behavior situation with the combo of PR and PP like you mentioned here?
-FedEx comes to the door and rings the door bell.
-Dog goes batshit crazy, barking and whipping shitties as you try to open the door.
-Dog barks at FedEx guy, jumps on him as you yell at your dog and apologize to the FedEx guy simultaneously, making excuses such as 'oh, he's just so friendly and loves when people come over' and other such blueberry-laden shit excuses. You get your sex toy shipment, close the door and then scream at the dog for misbehaving.
Now your dog thought this entire episode was fucking awesome. He got to:
-Bark like hell
-Whip shitties
-Jump on someone to get attention from them and from you via your yelling
-Got more attention from you when FedEx left when you screamed at him
All of that was more fun to him than lying around, licking his ass, which is what he was doing before the doorbell rang.
Your dog got a triple whammy of exactly what he wanted: attention; with the added bonus of some fun barking and shitty whipping.
*Most dogs are ignored unless they're doing something YOU perceive as 'bad' or giving YOU obedience commands. If the dog nudges you as you watch whatever your favorite Allison Sweeney show is and you pet him to get you to pay attention to him, he has conditioned you to follow HIS command (the nudge) to get HIS desired response (the petting vs. the ignoring).
Is the liquid shit getting cleared from your eyes and the rigid shit from your ears, yet?
I will finish this up with the solution and at least a partial answer to your question either later or tomorrow via editing this post.
