I once did the framing and drywall at the Japan Inn, a high end Japanese resturant in Georgetown.

They brought in a traditional Japanese carpenter and his apprentice. I had to work closely with him and it was one of the best and most educational team ups I ever had on a job site.

He used saws like that and instead of a tape measure a string with marks in an old Japanese measuring system but he was awesome at telling me, almost to the 8th of an inch what he needed from us.

An awesome guy as well, This was before I started formal Ju Jutsu but I had some from an old instructor and we started talking and since the floor was Tatame, he gave me a few lessons while I worked with him.

His work was beautiful, one of 3 guys I would say went beyond master carpenter and was a Grandmaster and he was only in his mid 30s. His Grandfather and father taught him and his family did this back for about 6 generations.

Lucky!..That's a great experience to have. Japanese timber framing is amazingly tight and like all good finish carpenters and boat builders they seem mostly disregard the tape or rule as for measuring, just marking the work against the work.
