Yeah, I decided to mix it up a little. Usually don't carry serrated knives.

I was leaning hard towards a spyderco, but since I decided against an Emerson or something at knife art, I went with a ZT, quite a bit because of the Kershaw thing.

$140 isn't so much that if something happens to it that I'll lose my shit. I've never lost a knife, so I'm not too concerned.

I once lost a Barlow pocket knife, that was orig. my dad's, while flying kites with my kids and it drove me nuts. Found it a year later when the farmer cut the tall grass in the field. It only had light rust on the blades. Probably cost about $5.00 new.

Yeah, I wouldn't be happy, but I wouldn't melt down over it like if I had spent $1200.

If my dad had handed down a knife to me, I'd probably be a lot more pissed off if I lost it, no matter the monetary value.

Flip-flopped a lot. There's no limit on concealed folders at the State level, but some cities have weird wording and odd blade limits.

This one has a 3.25" long blade. I was going to get the next knife up with a 4" blade, but this one is already a shade over 6 oz.

BladeHQ has so many knives, it boggles the mind.

And I refused to look at Knife Art after the first time. I would have maxed out my credit card.

Thanks to everyone on the recommendations.
It looks like a nice knife and this is a fun thread but what are you going to do with it? You want to have it by your laptop in case the UPS man gives you any shit when he drops of a package? Do you strap it to your leg when you go out to pick up the mail and cut the grass? Have it hidden under the seat when you head out for Filipino take out?

Dick.

I actually spend a fair amount of time outdoors when I'm not hurt. I also have carried a knife for protection for the last 10 years or so.

It's surprising how often a knife comes in handy.

And that was a trick post if I've ever seen one.

You know I don't eat Filipino food.

That was an honest question. Unlike the rest of the assassin road warriors that post here, you work from home on your keyboard. I have been looking at knives recently but when I see a cool knife, I realize that it would virtually never leave my home though a guy that I know did use the scissors on his Swiss Army Knife to help me out a few weeks ago and I realize how convenient they are.

I meant Filipino ladyboy hookers, not food, jerk.

I use whatever I EDC on a regular basis (non work related shit): opening and recycling boxes, recycling plastic bottles, food prep, gardening trimming, fishing stuff, opening mail... and self defense.

I always carry some kind of blade, a multitool and a flashlight. It doesn't have to be anything fancy: give me a simple Victorinox Farmer and an AAA light and I'll be happy.

Fair enough - I carry a flashlight many places and probably would use a smaller knife if I had it on me.

What's I EDC?

EDC = Everyday Carry in gun nut lingo as well.

And you're confusing me with EZ. I'm not into ladyboys or hookers, though I don't judge.

I prefer to carry one item, and a multi-tool doesn't really suit my personal preferences or common needs. I have a tool kit in my truck along with other important items. Rarely have Ia had need for a multi-tool, but I know a lot of people who couldn't live without one because of work, hobbies etc.

Many of my friends live in somewhat dicey areas, so on the occasion when I actually stay out later, I find myself in areas that are less than safe with a fair degree of regularity.

In an earlier post, I noted that it's a bit of overkill, but still fairly low risk and a reasonable precaution given where my life takes me at times.

The first rule is to try to avoid a problem. The second rule is to win a confrontation if it can't be avoided. I feel confident that even with my somewhat diminutive stature, I can handle most problems without confrontation and without a weapon. If that's not the case, I'd rather be with it than without.

If you're considering something, a good multi-tool or something like the Ken Onion designs from Kershaw are legit (I'm a Ken Onion fanboy). A lot of them come under $100, have safety locks, a "bias towards closure" (required here in California for a lot of, or maybe all, folding knives), and hold an edge as well as anything.

The cheaper items pointed out in this thread are all fine items as well. I don't lose knives though and am willing to spend a little more for something I like and know will hold up over time.

Everyone's got their preference and comfort level.

This particular knife should arrive later today (Wednesday), and my current Ken Onion Kershaw blade is being passed along. I'll miss it, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this ZT is.

Word of advice, Baf: stay away from CRKT Onion's designs. The Ripple and the Eros are cool as fuck, but the ball-bearing pivot (IKBS) is wayyyyyy too fragile.

My Eros got broken in less than three months (I loved the fucking thing). Never had a problem with any of my Kershaws or Onion originals. So fuck CRKT!

Ordered the ZT a couple minutes later.

The one you want is probably this:

This and the little inova keychain led light you can get at Target for 6 or 7 $ will handle 99% of your chores if you don't really need much. If you really open a lot of boxes etc. get one of these:

If your work, like mine, has you using them more often, this is the best deal:

The knife needs to be on a tool so you don't look like a nut in mixed company. The tool needs to be have a belt clip. The knife needs to open one handed without a lot of rigmarole. The lock has to be secure enough that it is safe to use, but more importantly, it has to be easy enough to work that you can close it safely. The point can't be needle pointy which is just going to get broken soon. It should be easy to sharpen to a decent edge, no need at all for a razor edge. The serrations are a plus for cutting rope or cord or webbing but usually when I am cutting that stuff it is Herculine and I have big tools handy. The screwdriver needs to work. The pliers doesn't get much play but the wire cutters do, and the wire cutters are the weakest feature here but good enough. The other pisser is that the screwdriver bit that is in the handle pops out when dropped and if you don't notice, it is a pisser getting a replacement bit.

The flashlight needs to operate on a battery I can get at a convenient store and not cost more than a minimum wage employee to run. A flashlight that can be used handsfree (in your teeth) is a must.

Everything has to be cheap enough that I can lose it once or twice a year without driving me bat shit crazy. Crazier.

Along with this, I try to remember to keep a pencil and or mini sharpie in my pocket. Carrying these things all the time saves a lot of time and aggravation. Beyond this, I am better off with actual tools.

As for protection - I guess the knife would give me an edge in a fistfight, the odds of a folding fighting knife doing anything for me that this won't, are astronomically small, I dig those fancy folders but I just don't see one saving my bacon.
But when I stand in front of the mirror and really look, I wonder: What the fuck happened here? Jesus Christ. What a beating!

I have a multi-tool but it is a bit big and never leaves my place. For EDC I have a pack of notecards and a Fisher Space Pen and a water bottle but am looking at a few other options in the next few days.

Hmmm, I typed out a post and it got lost.

This knife came today.

It's a beast. Fairly heavy, but not so heavy and big that it's cumbersome to carry. The blade is sharp and sturdy, like I expected, and it's solid in the hand. Not a whole lot of potential for slippage unless you're just being a dumbass.

The one drawback: The clip is so stiff, that I can't get it onto my pocket. I've got to get it to relax a bit so it'll slide on, but I'm not quite sure the best way to do that.

The last couple of Kershaws that I had were smooth in every way. This one opens quick, stays shut, but it's not smooth clipping onto my pocket because it simply won't clip.

Definitely not a good choice for someone's first pocketknife, but I'm pretty happy with what I've got.

Bend the clip, but not much.

I really dig most of Ken Onion's stuff, glad you like it. The clip will 'break in' with use more than likely. I've got a couple Emersons that were like that and they loosened up in time.

I really like G10 scales but they absolutely destroy your pockets.

ZT's G10 isn't as aggressive in texture compared to my Emersons though.

Yeah, I put a couple business cards in there and lightly pried it. Seems like its relaxing a bit.

Get this squares away and I'll never get rid of this thing.

Tom Brown stuff is subject to a lot of hype and a lot of criticism, but this knife has been outstanding, got one for my twelve year old as well. It's a fixed which a lot of people don;t like but personally I prefer it.
