Namibia
Leaving Tuesday. 6 days tracking desert elephants, two days at the Cheetah Conservation Center, a short speech at some travel conference, and a few days at Etosha Nat. Park, where you can track rhino on foot (looks like with an armed guard).
I regret that I probably will not be able to post here until Nov. 7. My life will be barren.

When you do trips like this, are you paying for the whole thing? Part of it? None? Or are you getting paid?seeahill wrote:Leaving Tuesday. 6 days tracking desert elephants, two days at the Cheetah Conservation Center, a short speech at some travel conference, and a few days at Etosha Nat. Everything is paid for by these guys:

Flights were economy but I used points to bump them up to biz class. Everything else is paid for, but I do have to give a half hour speech.
I stayed 5 extra days so I could go to Etosha and that will cost me $600.

I can do an excellent Seeahill impression ("harrumph, harrumph...cabins...fire...") if you get more than one offer for the same dates.

Sure. No alerts for Namibia. Besides, I've been there before and found it's a pretty together place. And the white Namibians I met were just friendly and proud of their country. Like to show you around.tough old man wrote:Did you READ the State Departments travel bulletins?

Have they put out anything other than "Do not, under any circumstances, leave the confines of the United States. Better yet, don't leave your house. That's right, you, fatass, go back, grab the biggest soda you can fit in your tubby hands and sit on the sofa and find something nice to watch on TV. It's a dangerous world out there." in the past thirty years or so?tough old man wrote:Did you READ the State Departments travel bulletins?

Namibia has got one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world, with estimation that one in three black Namibians have the virus today. Hence use prevention; else you probably play Russian roulette with a fully loaded

IIRC only Haiti is worse. Just want you safe and healthy for the next visit. Take some surgical gloves and keep them with you. If there is an accident and you need to help you'll have them.

I remember heading off base in Djibouti, and we came on some guy laying on the road surrounded by a bunch of fellow Djiboutians. He'd been hit by a car, and was bleeding and generally not looking too good. I mentioned that maybe someone ought to do something to help him, like control his neck, plug that leak, check him for secondaries. We all looked at each other and thought, "I'm not touching that...nooooo way."tough old man wrote:IIRC only Haiti is worse. Just want you safe and healthy for the next visit. The Djiboutian "ambulance" pulled up, and two guys got out and grabbed the patient by the hands and feet and gently lofted him up into the bed of their red pickup truck. Last heard or seen.
