It's also a semi-tropical area with palm trees and maybe an inch or two of snow in the mountains.

So far, no Russian leader has been able to do much with them. The invasion of Afghanistan didn't turn out so well, and the Russians have been trying to keep a lid on the Chechens since 1785, with only limited success.

No, they have not broken Chechenya's back but they sure do kill a fuck load of them and something at the Olympics might give Vlad the excuses he heeds to do the kind of things that would brake them.

Afghanistan, do you know the last 2 years of the war, militarily the Soviets were actually winning again? Kind of like us in Vietnam, too late to make a difference by then it was time to GTFO.

The US copied many of their later methods and tactics when they came in in 01. Using Special forces to find the enemy and then using their air assault units and gunships to fucking thrash them, as well as dealing with some tribes themselves, remember that was actually a civil war at first.

Sochi is a *dream* terror target. The world came to them and built a resort within target range. They can just phone in daily bomb threats to the international media and maybe some suicide bombings in nearby towns. IED anybody? Doesn't matter how many the Russians kill. It's about the visitors.

But, I expect the Russians to lay down some insane security.

Not saying they can stop it, saying they will do more than about anyone to try to and they don't have the same issue with collaterals that we do. He'll care about the tourist as for how he'd look and that's probably about it.

I'm not sure the Chechens consider that a deterrent. It wouldn't take much to make a dramatic statement.

Tim, you should go. I cant see passing up on the Olympics based on a very low probability. Olympics are a spectacular event and well worth the pain in the ass to attend.

Deal is I only have a couple of days to spare. I'm thinking there may be lesser disasters looming. Bad fake snow. Lack of organization. Bullying security. Stuff like that.
