I wholeheartedly agree.
A thread with updates of Igx members that OD'd would be awesome.
To be fair, some of the mouth breather beer drinkers could start a thread about their DUIs, beating their wives and trying to get onto the liver transplant list.
Now Milosz, don't go spending them internet bucks real fast. Save some for retirement.

I hadn't heard about painkillers causing his relapse, but it makes sense. I've known some people who had long term sobriety, were prescribed pain pills, and ended up addicted. At least one ended up dead.
And docs hand that shit out for nothing.
After oral surgery about a dozen years ago I informed the PA that I was an alcoholic and had to be careful with pain pills. She gave me a scrip for 28 Vicodin, and a sample pill for the road.
A week later I told her that I had just picked up a bottle of Motrin and popped four at a time. She said, "That's great, it's just as good for pain, and it's an anti inflammatory, so it helps you heal faster."
Bitch could have killed me.
The Times obit mentioned that he was found with a brand of heroin that hadn't been seen since 2008.
It all points to him having been clean again for a while, and fucking up big time.

Would you take all 28 Vicodins at the same time? Or are you speaking long term as the crippling greasy green grip of addiction sets in around pill 22 or so?
Just trying to paint myself an accurate picture here.

I started that one once but it got deleted mysteriously. Then re-instated just as mysteriously upon uproar. And then deleted again at some point. Haterz behind the scenes: PEACE BE UNTO YOU MAY YOUR HEARTS FIND LOVE

Long term.
In the context of being a filthy pig of a drunk, getting naked and pissing and puking in inappropriate places, and being in a blackout for much of the decade between 17 and 27, I really wasn't that bad when it came to pills.
I never scammed them, and could really kick back and enjoy myself with a couple anaprox and a couple beers in a way I never could with strictly booze, or booze and weed together.
Almost makes me wish I had some muscle relaxers in me right now.

Hey! On the bright side the bitch gave you 28 Vicodins to sell your pals!
Anyone his age has no excuses for even trying H. It's a damn near "Yes, try it and you will get hooked!" thing. So fuck him. He lucked out in life, not having to have a real job since, ever! He goes and shits it away with a junky drug. Not righteous weed, decent pills, no he jabs the dart into his arm.

I can tell you the pendulum has radically swung the other way. In urban areas esp. long term pain management (one of the only things modern med is actually decent at) is getting shoved aside by your good ole' War on drugs...and it's going to get worse.
The current "addiction epidemic" with pain pills is directly proportional to the amount of money being made on the black market. Make that shit over the counter for adults and let the chips fly.

Or switch to prescribing weed and dry up the market.

I am curious to see once it's made serious inroads, how effective it is for long term pain management in broad population. Wish I liked the stuff...seems like the quality and depth of selection is getting ridiculous.

I get hellacious cotton mouth that leads to anxiety attacks so I haven't touched weed in a long time. I've heard from friends in CO that some new strains are cotton mouth-free, which makes me want to spend my next vacation in a cabin in the woods somewhere near Colorado Springs.
Weed is pretty low grade against pain, IMO. Many time I've been in a world of hurt and had plenty of weed but I was using my usual trick to get Percocets at the least.
But then I always seemed to save a few to party with?
And Milo, just have a big Gatoraide or bottle of water while you hit the bong, that should handle that.
Being legal, I'd use a vaporiser for sure!

I want to agree with you on the bolded part but I can't.
Narcotic painkillers and H are related. You are pre disposed to addiction. You are clean for 20+ years but that's not a guarantee of anything. You take pain pills for a legitimate reason. That old familiar feeling comes back, and it doesn't take long for addiction to take over. It's not a big jump to shooting heroin. I mean, we do wine tastings at work all the time. I can't have a sip, spit it out and walk away. I just can't.
Now in Hoffman's case, he was clean a long time, but was he going to meetings? Was he dealing with what we (in AA) believe to be a disease?
I want to say it's really clear cut, that he was clean and he had a choice and then he fucked up. But once you, take those pain pills, it becomes very fuzzy.

My point is that you have to be a fucking idiot to even consider H. I can understand being a pillhead and falling off the wagon into more pills, being an alcoholic and going back to the sauce. Those are things society says are OK at one level, so it's easy to become an addict to those things, but H?
Granted Oxy has led some to H. My Lady has a lifelong friend who had drug issues as a teen and then in her late 20's after being clean for years fell in with a group of pillheads. (The time that glamorise being addicted too.)
She ended up not being able to get Oxy and so falling to H and sucking and riding black dick to score.
So yeah, I know it can happen but he was a man of my generation and our generation knows H fucks you up, almost guaranteed. I don't have sympathy for those who get into H as I do for many other addicts.
Fire burns, stick your hand in it and scream and I just laugh.

I respect your opinion (no really, in this case..I'm trying) but the lines you're drawing around H and opiates generally are arbitrary and not based in biochemistry. Nothing monumental changes in you when slam H for the first time anymore than you are changed when you go under general anesthesia.
For sure heroin is a helluva drug and true full blown addiction is awful (when the supply runs out) But whether you're suffering from PTSD or a misplaced sense of entitlement, the war on drugs "pillhead" language undermines your point...which I think is that personal choice and consequences is at the center of the mix..not some mysterious sucking vortex,

I don't think the average heroin addict sat down one day and says, "You know what I want to try? Heroin." Some, sure, but it doesn't account for the renewed popularity. There is no doubt in my mind that pain pills led to heroin's renewed popularity. They prescribe them so casually, for nothing. But if the wrong person comes across these, they are going to be in over their head before they know it. (And usually they don't know they're the wrong person until it's too late.) When the pain pills run out, they'll exhaust their legal options trying to get more, then resort to black market pills, then one day when their illegal supply dries up, they resort to heroin. I'd be surprised if anyone here didn't know someone this happened to.
I don't know if it is like this everywhere, but around here, if you see someone in the newspaper under 30 dead without a cause of death, it's pretty safe to assume it was heroin, and most people dying under 30 don't have a cause of death in the paper. I guess a lot of people think they're all scumbags and morons until it happens to someone they know. I suspect that many and maybe most kids start with pain pills swiped from a medicine cabinet. Apparently the raiding the medicine cabinet is the new raiding the liquor cabinet, pain pills and happy pills are more tempting than the booze left over from last Christmas or whatever. I guess it isn't surprising when so many people have a handful of unused xanax and vicodin and etc. stashed, doesn't even occur to people to keep an eye on it.
The GBM's story about casually prescribing Vicodin to an addict give me the douche chills.
But when I stand in front of the mirror and really look, I wonder: What the fuck happened here? Jesus Christ. What a beating!

I get the furious cotton mouth myself. Lips-sticking-to-teeth levels of dry mouth. It's been quite a while since I've had any weed.
There's a bike mechanic's school in CO Springs that I've been to before. They're offering a suspension repair/race tuning course this spring. I may have to make the trip and report back. Might make a good motorcycle vacation.
