To me the issue isn't the hitching and the ramping -- if those were allowed under the rules, then whatever. But as far as I know strongmen still have to lock the fucking thing out.

This thread had come to read like an apology for a reality TV show. There's more intellectual integrity on the average Supernatural/Xfiles/Buffy FanBoi Tumblr.

It doesn't fucking matter if it was an "official" crossfit event or not. Show that tape to anyone who knows what crossfit is and they'll say it was a crossfit workout.
Spin away Russ.Kevin Ogar injured himself at an unlicensed fitness competition. It was not a CrossFit competition. ESPN’s reporter Mark Fainaru-Wada knows this because Kevin Ogar told him so in an interview. Yet Fainaru-Wada chose to ignore this fact and wrote that the OC Throwdown was a “CrossFit event,” nonetheless.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. - Helen Keller

Wait, so homey that almost got cut in half at a "Crossfit" competition, is interviewed by one of the most respected investigative journalists in the country, and tells Fainaru that the article is to ONLY be about how helpful the @fit community is?Stillwater wrote:http://therussells.crossfit.com/2014/07 ... alism-101/

ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” tried to produce a show on injuries in CrossFit. They failed. Instead, they covered injuries outside of CrossFit, but tried to present them as CrossFit injuries. The result is a confused, misleading mess.
Nobody's being misled. There's no question that these injuries came in @Fit competitions by @Fit competitors.
Kevin Ogar injured himself at an unlicensed fitness competition. It was not a CrossFit competition.
Interesting use of "injured himself." Normally, when an athlete is injured, the author doesn't go out of his way to assign responsibility. But more interesting is the "not a CrossFit competition." I thought, "Gee, I'm pretty sure OC Throwdown is a CrossFit competition." But you go to their current website, and it didn't exist before Ogar's injury. The new one indeed doesn't say "CrossFit" too much. The pre-injury version?

From 2012 they just call it the OC Throwdown, but from the "About" page in 2013:
The 2012 OC Throwdown presented by Life AsRx is HERE! We are going into our 3rd year of throwing down the LARGEST independent XFit comp in Southern California. For the first time we ran an online qualifier. OVER 1,100 CROSSFITTERS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY REGISTERED FOR THE QUALIFIER. For 3 weeks a new workout was released on Sunday evening. Athletes had one week to complete the workout and log their times on this website. From 1,100 we narrowed the field down to just the top 150 men and top 100 women. This year promises to be even bigger and better. A 40,000 sqft professional indoor venue, top Games and Regional competitors, and a $5,000 cash purse.
As in previous years the OC Throwdown is a 2 DAY event. The workouts will be varied and constitute a thorough test of an individuals fitness. In other words, expect to be SERIOUSLY tested both physically and mentally. Soreness and exhaustion are to be expected. Bruised egos, and torn hands are a good possibility. After all, THIS IS CROSSFIT! The CHAMPIONS of the 2012 OC Throwdown will certainly lay claim to the title of THE FITTEST IN SOCAL.
So the competitors are referred to as "CrossFitters" and they make a point to caplitalize the fact that what they are doing is CrossFit, with no apparent penalty from one of the most litigious companies this side of Scientology.
"OC Throwdown" is also copyrighted by Orange Coast CrossFit.
It's a competition that described itself as a CrossFit competition run by a CrossFit facility with CrossFit coaches contested by CrossFitters. Until somebody got seriously hurt, then he became an "unlicensed" fitness competitor who hurt himself.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Re: The couch thread
Everything is crossfit until someone gets hurt. Then all of a sudden nothing is crossfit unless it is Crossfiit.
Whatever.
Congrats to the guy who couldn't make it in the minors. Now he's a major league exerciser.

Outside Magazine has an issue with @Fit and the Russells as well. I guess, THEY don't get it either.

That FB thread is mindroasting. It is like watching a few adults telling children that the real world actually does not work that way but, well...
In the mill, getting down.

Russ is young, and really out of his comfort zone. I suspect a major issue is that he needs to run everything by Saran or someone else first.

Re: The couch thread
I keep thinking that CF will lose some of its cultishness, but yeah...
Re: The couch thread
I thought a few years ago the CrossFit would eventually become big enough that the mainstream media would have to pay closer attention, and the abrasive, do-it-our-way, fuck you mentality that "worked" for CFHQ when no one paid attention would just create new problems and dig every hole deeper. We're there now.

If they don't adapt to dealing with the media better they will continue to have to fight them off with both fists. They cannot expect to have a fuck you mentality with a business this size and with this much coverage. Its too big and more people take notice of it now because of the exposure.Drywall wrote:I thought a few years ago the CrossFit would eventually become big enough that the mainstream media would have to pay closer attention, and the abrasive, do-it-our-way, fuck you mentality that "worked" for CFHQ when no one paid attention would just create new problems and dig every hole deeper. Re: The couch thread
I'm suprised they are still allowed to post publicly as attack dogs or now in the role of "what is crossfit" jury.
In the original blog post he was stumped by this
Alex
I’m still confused. I don’t mean to be a smart-ass, but what if we get more specific?
“1. Someone performing training on his or her own, using methods or knowledge he or she found on CrossFit.com or other CrossFit publications.”
1. Crossfit.com WOD is Filthy Fifty. Sally is at home doing this WOD she found on the main site the day it is posted, and sprains her ankle landing during the box jumps.
“2. Someone performing training on his or her own, using methods or knowledge gained from our CrossFit Trainer education and certification programs.”
2. Betty has passed her L1, and is training at home doing one of the workouts from her L1 course. It’s 21-15-9 burpees and thrusters. She sprains her wrist on the burpees.
“3. A licensed CrossFit affiliate, employing CrossFit L1 Trainers who use CVFMHI to train members.”
3. Jack is at Albany CrossFit, a licensed CrossFit affiliate. Kevin is his coach. Kevin has passed his L1 course, and taken the coaches prep course. The WOD is Helen, and Jack gets a SLAP tear while doing pull-ups.
Are any of these CrossFit injuries which can be counted toward injuries per 1000 hours trained? I’m seriously not trying to troll, but want to make sure I’ve got it right. When people ask me about what CrossFit is, and how dangerous it is, I want to be able to give them the correct answer. I also appreciate that you guys take the time to respond to comments.

I'd say all should be considered CF injuries. I'm not sure what the law would say

I don't know. If I had a ton of cash, enough that I didn't have to worry about the cost of a mojito on the beach, and had to choose to keep the fuck you attitude, or get the stress and BS that goes with building a pile of cash into a mountain of cash, I might keep the fuck you attitude. But then, I've always preferred working for small companies instead of large ones.

With the same logic, had the above examples went on to do kick ass things instead of getting hurt they couldn't be considered crossfit successes either.Yorkie wrote:I agree. Gg gives a fuck shaf.
Why?
Reebok. Progenex. ESPN. National coverage of the games. Etc.
He just wants to do it all his way and that shit won't work if they want to continue to grow.
He could afford to give a fuck when it was 2009, not now. I don't think they will dissolve, but the money train will slow down hard

I don't think so. It seems to me that he is pretty content with the money he's making and is ready to sit back and enjoy doing exactly what he wants to do. I do think he wants the games to be the premier professional "exercise" event of the year, though, and will take steps to make that happen.

Re: The couch thread
yeah, more and more I think that the Games being massively successful is his goal, so, maybe it will involve more delicate management of the media.
Re: The couch thread
It's already bigger than strongman ( or am I wrong) and that gets tv time in the uk.
The games are the saving grace after the military, police etc all moved away from cf.
I can see it growing but it's getting more and more specialised - the average joe will stop entering the open, and only the top beasts will be performing.
The mlm scheme of affiliates and cf Certs must make great money.
Now he just needs to cash the games in for some kind of tv deal and then he has made it.
