IMO, a patently hostile act. She would have been likely to discover him.

My dad did himself in with a shot to the head. In his studio, where the first person to find him was bound to be his wife. It really is the ultimate "fuck you".

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

***

My notion of the dynamics of suicide changed when a neighbor's estranged husband dropped by her apartment to shoot himself. When she and the kids were home.

Not that hostility is always involved, just often.

Haven't read about it yet but imagine that he would have a housekeeper or personal assistant stopping by if not living in the house.

Williams was last seen alive at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, by his wife, when she went to bed, Boyd said. He apparently went into a bedroom at an unknown time after that. His wife left the home at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, assuming Williams was still asleep.

Williams' personal assistant, concerned because he wasn't responding to knocks on his door, entered the room and found him dead at about 11:45 a.m., Boyd said.

The thought of my wife and/or kids finding me was always at the forefront of my mind when suicide creeped into my thoughts.

Friend of mine found her daughter, freshman student at VA Tech, hanging in her closet when she came home for spring break. Hard to picture that moment.

I've seen some "Don't judge," Facebook postings. The ones I've seen don't separate the depression issue from the suicide issue. IMO, they not (always) the same.

IMO, there are at least 3 issues: 1) depression; 2) suicide; and 3) the method of suicide.

I would not judge or condemn someone for being depressed or contemplating suicide. In some situations (not many), I'm in sympathy with suicide.
But if you commit suicide in a way that likely throws your corpse in a loved one's face, you are a selfish asshole.

I've been at the scene of plenty of suicides. There are ways to do things so that EMS/Police find your body (or hotel staff). And there are ways that give a big FUCK YOU to your family or associates.

It's honestly the only thing that keeps many people upright...and it's a damn good reason.

Agree. I can't imagine the pain I would cause my daughter if I committed suicide.

Don't do this to hotel staff - they're just minimum wage working stiffs who don't have better options. It's like doing it to your waitress at the coffee shop. Make sure it's EMS or Police or something that find you.

I quit choking myself when I jerk-off because the thought of somebody finding me like that, in the event of an accident, was too much to handle.

I'm not being snarky, either. I'm telling the truth.

I can't think of anything that would inflict a greater sense of abandonment on a child.
I also can't think of a thing that would give a child a brighter green light to do the same thing someday.
Suicidal thoughts should be treated like alcoholism, the future will take care of itself, just don't drink/off yourself today. Forever may seem impossible, but just hold on for this very minute.

I knew a guy who had terminal cancer. Parked himself outside the police station in the early hours and shot himself.

Four issues in this case: 4. Substance abuse. He had been sober 20 years, starting drinking again, and had been in rehab at least twice in eight years.
Depression+alcohol=bad idea. Especially with the track record record of someone who has been to AA.

Two years ago a friend hanged himself. He texted his wife, who was at work: "I love you. I'm sorry. Call 911."

I usually post in jest but if any of you ever feel down, feel free to bounce me a note in private and I could let you know if you should off yourself or not.

Aw c'mon, Fatz!! I was watching World's Greatest Dad when I posted that. Great fucking movie, and we needed some levity, and I'm sure Robin William's looked down from Heaven and grinned approvingly when I posted it.

Been to that ledge once or twice, but never leapt. That was when I didn't have a wife. Just having her in my life, much less a kid, I can't fathom leaving it for her to find.

I pray that he found the peace he lacked in this life and that his family weathers this horrible storm. A real tragedy.

I just read that he had Parkinson's, and that changes my point of view.
My Dad has Alzheimer's, as did his mother, and if I ever get that diagnosis, I'm offing myself. If he decided to go out on his own terms, then I say good for him.

I'm not sure why, and I haven't said this publicly, but for some reason this has really bothered me. It is kind of like losing a friend. Not sure why. Briefly met him one time at an eatery/bar along with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Monica Potter when they were filming Patch Adams in Chapel Hill.

Robin was very nice and friendly, Philip was somewhat aloof and Monica was extremely friendly. My friends and I actually hung out with Monica Potter for an extended period of time at a bar where she proceeded to get very drunk and had to be carried out of the bar by her friends.

I got pretty drunk myself and ended up telling Philip Seymour Hoffman that he played one hell of a faggot in Boogie Nights. That may have been why he was so aloof.
