Seems smart to have US fingers touching more more more North American energy.
Useless factoid from "The Men Who Built America" on Netflix:
John D. Rockefeller wasn't getting the rail transportation costs he wanted for his Standard Oil shipments from Vanderbilt and others so he initiated the first US oil pipeline system to fuck the railroads. Now oil's shipping by rail because of resistance to pipelines. Irony.

This may have an effect on the debate:

http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/9 ... DerailmentA rail line where an oil train derailed has reopened in southern West Virginia.
A statement from multiple agencies responding to the fiery derailment said crews restored the tracks and reopened the line for commerce on Thursday afternoon. Cleanup activities continue at the site in Mount Carbon.
Investigators have not determined what caused 27 cars of the 109-car CSX train to go off the tracks during a Feb. 16 snowstorm.
The overturned cars have been relocated to a rail yard. The statement says about 172,000 gallons of crude oil recovered from the tank cars were expected to be transferred starting Thursday to other tank cars for transport elsewhere.
And about 97,000 gallons of an oil-water mix have been recovered from containment trenches near the Kanawha River.

You are quite wrong. Read the bill.nafod wrote: If the pipeline goes through the U.S., we control it, yes.
And we get a cut of every dollar made from that stuff as it flows through and gets refined by us.

Re: Pipeline
The pipeline is expected to raise gas prices in the Midwest. This pipeline is about lowering the transportation costs that have previously made the market for tar sands more local than the Canucks would like.johno wrote:Do you drive a car? Once the oil gets to the Gulf, the effect on everyone else's gas prices will depend on the effect this has on global prices, which will be small.
As for the money to be made in refining, keep in mind that tar sands are more costly to deal with than regular oil.
This pipeline isn't about American consumers or workers. It about Canadians. That's fine with me, but only if the Canadians can pay property owners enough to do this without the application of eminent domain on our side of the border.
