What would YOU do in Vegas 02/06/15 - 10/06/15 ?

Post by terra »

Being flown into your lovely country by a wealthy patient to look after him and a family member in my capacity as health consultant, for a bit over a week. I will be be in Vegas for that whole time...

He's a high roller so no need to mention the obvious Vegas activities. I'll be sick of high roller rooms, limos, shows, burlesque dancers and gambling after day 2 (I won't be sick of the fucking good restaurants and food/drink and being treated like a rock star).

So, what would you do if you were in Vegas for over a week and wanted to escape the usual gambling/casino life? Thinking outdoorsy stuff, or dare I say culture, lifestyle, or anything cool interesting and a bit out of the ordinary?

What's on?

Thanks.

Pick up Turd on your way there and go protest some women's health clinics.

Or you can type out the Westside Book of Methods, verbatim, with PL54.

Do you like mountain biking? Bootleg Canyon near Boulder City has an awesome trail network, one of the best in the country, and there is a cycle shop in Boulder City you can rent full kit from. Nice squishy bike, etc.

You'll be driving out that way because you'll want to visit Boulder Dam while in Vegas.

1) Go to Hoover Dam, a modern wonder of the world. The new bridge they built next to it is also very cool. Add Valley of Fire State Park if you want more nature and have a few additional hours to burn.

2) Rent a car and drive two hours to Death Valley National Park. Ghost towns, giant sand dunes, and lots of otherworldly desert scenery. Rent a 4-wheel or all wheel drive if you want to get to the sand dunes. A small SUV would be useful for the ghost town but I got around OK in a Toyota Corolla. Just make sure that you have plenty of extra water in the vehicle. It was 118 degrees fahrenheit when I was there last July - still loved it. We did it on a whim and were on the road around 10:00 AM and were back in time for a late dinner.

First thing to do is learn to write dates like an American. Hopefully the rest of these degenerates just misunderstood and thought you had months. If you're only there for a week and working a lot you probably shouldn't leave and especially shouldn't do something like fucking mountain bike in the desert in the middle of June.

Cirque du Soleil shows are great
High Roller at the Linq
Downtown is supposed to be cool now
check out some hotel pools
walk the strip, gamble and drink. Grab a seat in a sports book for a game/race/fight
too bad you're just missing the weekend of EDC

EDIT: i clearly did not read past the subject of the OP. lulz

I wouldn't travel there for it, but I hit it when I am there for a long stay. Out-doorsy stuff a little off the beaten track. Fantastic trails, like riding on the surface of the moon.

I second the suggestion to hit Death Valley. Or really, just go driving anywhere in the desert. An austere beauty.

I second the Hoover Dam visit. I enjoyed it

I recommend staying in the room watching porn, eating fried food and drinking. Room service, of coarse.

Lotus of Siam is really excellent Northern Thai in a strip mall well away for the strip. Not expensive, but consistently considered on of the best restaurants in town.

The Mob Museum is great! It is really well put together and one of my favorite museums. http://themobmuseum.org/

The Fremont street area has under gone a renovation and a lot of new hip businesses. There is a small business incubator built out of shipping containers that is supposed to be pretty neat (businesses get cheap rent for 6 months or a year so they can figure out if they can pull it off or not without having to incur extreme amounts of debt).

The Pinball Hall of Fame is fun if you are into silver balls. http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

Thanks David. But he said the place i'm staying has a good gym. Not sure where i'm staying, one of the MGM casinos, that's where he has all his comps. Have stayed at Belagio and Aria before and I think Monte Carlo tha last time. Both Ballagio and Aria have decent gyms with Oly bars, heavy dumbells and racks (or equiv).

If I told you what happened the first time he hosted me there you would really think I was full of shit. I posted the experience here. Some older IGx's may remember it.

Thanks Turd. That's a great link. Those places look close and short hikes that'll make good quick breaks when not 'on duty'.

Nafod, I did Boulder Dam the first time I went. As an ex-engineer and fan of the Highwaymen song I Will Remain it was great to see. The burlesque dancer I met on that trip thought it hilarious that I was in Vegas on a high roller tab and spent the morning looking at a dam. Mountain biking was something I looked at last time but didn't get to do. Would probably look into some cross country type riding or tour, not downhilling. As mentioned by others, I can't risk getting busted up.

Death Valley or similar sounds cool, thanks Donkey.

Yeah, sorry about that.... I'm there for two weeks.

I did Zoomanity first trip. Sat on the red VIP lounge at the front and became part of the start. Have a photo with performers to prove it. Saw a heap of the CdS shows and got to treat some of the performers at the Uni of Nevada Aqua therapy centre. Lovely Eastern Europe ex-gymnasts.

Thanks Bedlam those links are great... Things I can zip out to during the day to escape the casinos.

It's one of those places where you can pick your level of grunt. When I went, I had first-timers with me.
Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, and the trails of Bootleg Canyon: These are three of the man-made wonders of southern Nevada.

Local trail builder Brent Thomson and associates have created an extensive network of both cross-country and downhill-specific trails (including Elevator Shaft's 22 percent grade!) that have been hailed as some of the best in the nation. There are 36 miles of trail in all a network of interconnecting trails that can be linked in countless ways to make a ride of any length and difficulty. You can even shuttle to the top.

I flew into Vegas on my way to a mil base in the California desert one time. Got into Vegas around 11:00 PM, drove downtown and hung out watching the freaks for a while. Then drove north and on into Death Valley National Park through the night, climbing on the road out of the valley and on up to the west rim and taking a dirt road to an overlook. From there, watched the sun rise over the far mountains, not a single freaking person in sight anywhere. That was cool.
