A month and a half after six officers were charged in {Freddie} Gray’s death, policing has dwindled in some of Baltimore’s most dangerous neighborhoods, and murders have risen to levels not seen in four decades.
. . .
At least 55 people, the highest pace since the early 1970s, have been killed in Baltimore since May 1, when the state’s attorney for the city, Marilyn J. Mosby, announced the criminal charges against the officers. Victims of shootings have included people involved in criminal activity and young children who were simply in the wrong place.

That quote as a stand alone can mean anything. As can your comment.

i think the quote is a clear statement of a worrisome development.

my observation reflects the view that the report comes from an excellent news organization, which is too ofter dismissed by self-identified conservatives with a superficial characterization ("liberal media") to suggest it cannot be trusted.

as for context, i'll let the times reporter provide it:
Police union officials say that officers are still coming to work, but that some feel a newfound reluctance and are stepping back, questioning whether they will be prosecuted for actions they take on the job.

Around the nation, communities and police departments are struggling to adapt to an era of heightened scrutiny, when every stop can be recorded on a cellphone. But residents, clergy members and neighborhood leaders say the past six weeks have made another reality clear: that as much as some officers regularly humiliated and infuriated many who live here, angering gang members and solid citizens alike, the solution has to be better policing, not a diminished police presence.

I guess a police department comprised of 50% blacks on patrol doesn't help things, huh?

While I'm sure there is a lot of 'do nothing, can't do nothing wrong' attitudes on patrol these days when it comes to pick-up collars, i.e. non-911 calls where the cop uses his experience to make a collar (most guns are recovered from the streets this way as are many, if not most, violent felons get collared....or at least they were). What NYT is not reporting is cops getting swarmed by 20+ people often times when getting out of the car to answer jobs. Insane as it sounds, they're probably more afraid of getting jammed-up than they are getting hurt.

It's funny. The NYT sucks but you are correct that the actual reporting is far less lefty than the usual republican suspects would lead you to think. Last I saw, The Wall Street Journal was the most left leaning in its actual reporting... And that was way before they decided to become a woman's and gay ally newspaper.

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Feels like the inner cities are going back to their "Escape from New York" phase.

Decades of racial advancement, trillions of dollars, landmark equality legislation, unprecedented minority representation in gov't & amongst police, and things are worse than ever in some communities.

There has been almost no "racial advancement" since the Watts Riots.

I know that is kind of a definitional thing, but still... Black America pre-Watts and Black America post-Watts? Worse in almost all ways by my measures.

I mean sure, they got surplus kcals and x-boxes and A/C and cell phones and Jay-Z but really?

I caught an interesting story written by a black man, who basically did his comparison of then vs. now and then was much better for blacks. Will look for it later.

I really like the fade out shot in Devil in a Blue Dress.

Pretty much sums up what was lost in that round of riots.

the solution has to be better policing, not a diminished police presence.
Without some concrete solutions, just a pious platitude. ^

I support better policing (body cams, for starters). BUT policing resistant people is ugly, and looks bad on video.
The media has amplified the vilification of police, providing little-to-no context for police use of force, echoing the claims of lying witnesses and race-baiters, and burying the final outcomes of due process. Did any major paper carry the front page headline: Hands Up, Don't Shoot was a Lie?

People need to know that they either comply with police commands or they receive an uncomfortable and ugly level of force. Citizens need to understand that the lies of Michael Brown's running buddy don't prove shit, and, while rumors are fast & easy, investigations take time. Especially when truthful witnesses hide from the police to avoid the snitches-get-stitches syndrome. The Media could help with this, but it won't. In fact, the Media is encouraging tribalism and law-breaking.

In high school, little shits need repeated viewings of the Chris Rock video. Shit, start in grade school.

Yeah, that struck me too, but given how much the gray lady was being lauded in the thread, I withheld my snark.

the point was the reporting--the astonishing rise in murders--not the platitudinous recommendation.

Yes, that was why I put actual reporting in italics... The data and facts and figures the NYT reports are fairly reliable...

I don't have anything against NYT, actually, but c'mon, man....there was nothing special about the reporting of the story.

IMHO, what's truly 'astonishing' is that people are astonished by the rise in violent street crime in today's social and political climate....the mopes were practically given a carte blanche to be mopes. I mean for fuckity fucking fuck's sake, Mike Brown, who was killed after committing a strong arm robbery (caught on video) by a white cop who was fully exonerated by The Obama's and Holder's 'chocolate' DoJ and he/Brown gets a plaque.....paid for by the city! That's some white hot insanity right there. Yes I realize that's not Charm City, but that matters notta-ting.

It will be an interesting summer on the streets.

A few middle class or higher white women will be hurt or raped or killed and then we'll see what happens.

I think that is literally what it will take for action to be taken.

that's true, but the times reported it. who else did? insofar as i know, the times found the story--even if it was right there in the open--to report.
