El Chapo

Post by seeahill »

I'm reading this great book, The Cartel, by Don Winslow, whom we've talked about before. It's about the drug wars in Mexico, 2008-2012. It's a little different from his other books. More complex. Deeper. I've read some knowledgeable reviews that say it's based on fact. Cartel guys did, in fact, decapitate five guys and roll the heads into a disco. Reviews say Winslow didn't even use the most gruesome facts.
El Chapo, in the book, is Adan Barrera. Who, what the fuck, escapes from the most max security jail in Mexico by, guess what, corrupting the jail officials. Hell of a book and now very very topical. Recommended.

Sanctuary cities in America are the perfect distribution points for the cartels' wares. Does he mention that in the book, Tim?

Nope. His previous books had to do with dealings in the States. Sanctuary cities were not mentioned.

Most of this book takes place in Mexico and involves a lot of murders and double-crosses among the various parties: the Gulf Cartel, the Zetas, the Michoacan Familia, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Army and Police who sometimes side with one group or another. Or even occasionally do their jobs.

He starts with one stooge body guard killer who will do his bidding. That peckerhead has to recruit two more. Those two have to recruit two and so on arithmetic progression style until he has an army of killer/earner/money collectors. They all have a job to do for da man. Includes politicians, police in sanctuary city distribution points. Anybody who steps out of line, dies a horrible death. Is that so hard to understand?

Today's Fresh Air on NPR had an interview w. Don Winslow. Sounds great. I'll be buying it later today.

Billy ain't afraid of nobody. Not even El Chapo or Donald Trump. He got a stooge to write his books and making millions and millions off his efforts.

I thought a "Power of the Dog" was very good. If anything it was too ambitious and he tried to tell the whole history of the drug war as a novel. I grew up in NY when all the crap was going on so i knew exactly who the characters where supposed to be. If you really want to enjoy it, read up on Roy DeMeo, Dominick Montiglio, Jimmy Coonen, and Mickey Featherstone as well as Iran-Contra.

I read about DeMeo and Montiglio in my early 20s. I am surprised he is not talked about more (DeMeo)?

This is the best book about DeMeo.

He also features prominently in this book and all books about Kuklinski. But you have to take this with a grain of salt, because Kuklinski spun a lot of bullshit.

This is the definitive book about Coonan and Featherstone.

http://www.amazon.com/Westies-Inside-Ne ... he+westies

This is just a great all around NY mob flavor book from the time, about a crazy paddy who went around kidnapping Gambino's. Hard to find though.

Montiglio is mentioned in most of these books, most prominently, Murder Machine.
