Average salary, according to BLS, for a patrol officer is $53,000. And, as a former Police yourself, you know that is before the 30 hours of OT every month just sitting there waiting to be taken. The Venerable Bogatir X wrote:Fuckers can manage a McDonald's in less than 4 years without any formal education and make more money than most cops or firefighters with triple that level of experience.
And as far as the 'average guy' getting by without committing a crime? I personally do not know more than a very small handful of people that don't have a side hustle that frequently involves skirting the law.

Do realize you're talking out of both sides of your mouth. On one side, you're eager to site facts and figures off the internet and on the other, you're willing to bring-up subjective OT, off the books and/or side work and other money making opportunities to 'skirt the law', but yet I'm the only one in our little convo who is relying on subjectivity and life experience..........Yes I Have Balls wrote:Average salary, according to BLS, for a patrol officer is $53,000. You're trying too hard. Where else does one GET facts and figures other than off the internet? Anywho, All I was doing was discounting your silly idea that a manager at McD's makes more than a cop. As to the "skirt the law" issue? You should know - you were a cop. Who else breaks more laws with the assurance that they won't be punished than a cop? Maybe politicians.
Good day sir!

Hours worked and what one does during said hours are two completely different things, but it's clear you don't 'get' that....there are cops and paramedics who make the same money a Mickey D manager makes (by hour). Personally, never worked at a Mickey D's, but I've done my fair share of 'menial' work without complaint, as an adult, too.
Your posture on cops essentially being dirty is noted and is an old and worn out 'thing' at this point. Have fun with that on the cuntastic "Officer Friendly" thread.
Good day, sir!

Recent polling shows that Trump’s anti-immigration message resonates most strongly among white people with relatively little formal schooling, a core constituency for the Republican Party. That same demographic bloc is in crisis: Recent research has shown that life expectancies for working-class white men are dropping off, even as they otherwise continue to improve across the board.
Trump has tapped into the despair and anger of many-working class white people. His fans, when speaking to the press, will often depict him as a champion of the working man standing athwart job-stealing immigrants and currency-manipulating foreigners.

As a current firefighter/paramedic, if you break down my salary to hourly I make a paltry $10/hr straight time for 120 hrs in 2 weeks. If you break it so it represents OT, the hourly wage goes down further. I am in the south so wages aren't great, but I am in the 2nd largest metro area in the state and we have one of the higher starting salaries. Cops start out making a little less than us.The Venerable Bogatir X wrote:Yes I Have Balls wrote:The Venerable Bogatir X wrote:Do realize you're talking out of both sides of your mouth. I love the fairytale that cops are cleaning up. Hell if you are making 50K+ in my state your in the top two agencies and they only have so many jobs so the majority are making less than 30K a year. Hell most deputies and corrections officers start less than 20K.

Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island pay their PODs absurd wages. I think they start around $85k and go triple digit after five years. Of course, air traffic controllers make six figures in those counties as well. Cost of living is outrageous.
Not sure what NYPD currently pays for the first five years, but I believe it may still be sub 30k. One of the many reasons I chose not to become a cop when I could was that I simply wouldn't have been able to pay NYC rent and didn't want to have to move back in with my parents.
Cops are rarely well paid.

Re: Not too early to call it....
Nassau/Suffolk have had the highest PD wages for decades. I think it was in the 70k range back in my day. The most I ever made as a NYC cop, was $44k and that was with OT. The girl I was shacked up with worked for Merrill Lynch and made about the same as me, so between the two of us, we could manage our $1400/mo rent back in the 90s. LEO generally don't make shit. Not sure if there has been a sweeping policy change, but back in my day, off duty work was extremely regulated to the point where hardly anyone did it. Although I did know that my dad, back in the day, was hired by Jews in the Diamond District to tail them from afar (for security) as they conducted business, so it stands to reason that 'super down low' type stuff still goes on for off duty work. The Ginger Beard Man wrote:Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island pay their PODs absurd wages. I have firefighter friends here in TX, they do pretty well. Good middle-class money ($50-65k depending on tenure that I know of, none with more than 7 years in), great benefits, retirement plans, etc. plus an assload of down time where they could be (and many are) running side jobs. 2 or 3 24-hour shifts every week leaves a lot of time to be a real estate agent.Dunn wrote: As a current firefighter/paramedic, if you break down my salary to hourly I make a paltry $10/hr straight time for 120 hrs in 2 weeks. Counting the hours spent at the station fudges those hourly numbers pretty hard - kind of like teachers who try to pretend they don't get 2 months off plus winter/spring break/holidays when they talk about yearly pay.
Re: Not too early to call it....
I don't know man. We don't have a lot of downtime here with our dept. We are a joint fire/EMS dept so our call volume is high enough that we stay pretty busy, on top of doing standard fire dept shit. Re: Not too early to call it....
Honestly, FDNY guys had a helluva racket, which is why so many of them are exNYPD. One of my childhood friends is a self made millionaire from fixing up and flipping houses in the Caribbean on his off days as a firefighter. The guy owns and flies his own plane. Now, it so happens that he called in sick on 9/11 and literally all of his brothers were lost at WTC, so I am quite sure, right or wrong, he'd walk away from all of it to relive that decision. Anyhow, FDNY....those dudes were the bouncers, ect, not NYPD. PD couldn't do that kind of stuff.Dunn wrote:I don't know man. We don't have a lot of downtime here with our dept. Are we going with the "Trump was born on third base" or "Trump is a business failure" narrative? You've been flipping back and forth between them and it would be nice to know which line to chant.
The system is working out as the system is designed to work and people will get who they deserve. You want the status quo for corporate America, vote Hillary and Jeb. You give a care about civil liberties, give Rand a shot. If the economy means anything, you have Trump. If you believe the country should simply elect the smartest guy in the lineup, you have Cruz. If you want fantastic internet memes, it's Bernie all the way. This is the deepest and most interesting field in years.
