The Chinese Double Bren Gun,

Before World War II the Nationalist Chinese Government purchased a number of Czech ZB vz.26 light machine guns in 8X57 Mauser. For those who don’t know, the ZB vz.26 became famous when the British adopted the firearm, creating a modified model of the light machine gun called the Bren Gun. The ZB vz.26 served China throughout World War II. However after 1950 the design became less important, as China had become a Communist country and thus adopted Soviet arms.

To make use of their old stocks of Czech Bren guns, the Chinese experimented with an idea to improve the firepower of the standard machine gun. Simply put, they created a “double Bren” gun by melding two ZB vz.26 light machine guns together. The new double barrel machine gun utilized a single receiver containing two working actions, fed by two magazines simultaneously. To conform with common caliber, they were rechambered for 7.62X39 and utilized standard AK magazines. It is unknown how many of these double Bren guns were manufactured during the 1950’s and 60’s, however only one example is known to survive today. It can be found on display at the Tongzou Militia Museum.
