They are self regulating as opposed to government regulated, that's the connection.
Don’t believe everything you think.

That's a weak distinction as they are very different in organization, intent and structure. The NRA is a business, it has full-time employees and does not portray itself as a community organization. The parallel is to what Schlegal described.

That's it, guy, have to get back to work. I understand what you're saying. I, too, would like to see more emphasis be placed on safety and personal responsibility and, as the article you posted stated, most of us have been touched at some point by suicide. Nice to see progress but would like to see the drug and medical industries aslo engaged. Duel with you another day.

The gun-owning community does do self-improvement like what you are talking about- how to better and more safely perform the activity. You aren't asking for the equivalent of becoming a better kayaker, you are asking for them to become junior psychological profilers. While I certainly won't argue against suicide prevention, I can easily see why the NRA would not want to be seen as having taken up some kind of mental health screening responsibility in any way... just imagine the inevitable lawsuits.

Also, the NRA, the corporation, is an executive bureaucracy, to see what the NRA member community is doing, you might look at the Friends of the NRA, which is the affiliated local chapters. It's like if you followed the head of the Boy Scouts of America around for a day, you'd have no idea what your local troops were actually doing.

The NRA is an advocacy group.

"kayakers" and "climbers" aren't.

A better comparison would be, Guns & Ammo or similar hobby magazines. They have similar articles that could be seen as 'self critiquing' by your definition. How to do things better. How to be safe, responsible, not an idiot.
