Re: Interesting Editorial by Tucker Carlson: Mitt Romney and America
Usually I dismiss anyone wearing a bow tie, but this was well worth a read, glad you posted it. I do not watch Fox News and have not really been exposed to Tucker Carlson, although I am aware of who he is in the broadest sense. Anyway, I bumped into this piece, but it struck me as disorientingly lev...

Re: Bullet Journaling
OK I can pass along some thoughts. I like hearing about different systems people use to organize their junk. I use a system that's remarkably similar to what you outlined, it's just what developed over time for me. The main difference is I don't use a bound pads, because it's easier to scan, shuffle...

Re: Multi monitor advices
I haven't had a chance to look into it yet but I just installed a Lenovo ThinkPad P70 for a customer. They are a bit expensive, starting about $1900, but they have impressive display capabilities. It had HDMI, Displayport, and Thunderport (seen on Macs) and I am 99% sure you could use 3 monitors wit...

Re: Windows 10
With few exceptions people seem to like it more than 8 but less than 7. Even so, if you have a Windows7 machine you want to run for a while yet, and you qualify for the free upgrade, I'd take it at some point. I think after offering this free upgrade Microsoft will not support 7 as long as they did ...

New Taboo: Hard Work
I, like all of you, have suspected that we're close, but I think I am going to call it: modern civilization has jumped the shark. “I want us to be super careful when we use the language “hard worker.” I actually keep an image of folks working in cotton fields on my office wall, because it is a remin...

I have never had a bad or even mediocre experience with SSDs but I have talked to people that put them in and got good results for a little while, but before long meh. I just read about this

looks like it would be worth a shot in those cases.

For me, for a weekend project, a desk would be more ambitious than a deck!
Around the house I think you're better off buying corded tools and hand tools, except for a cordless drill & impact driver set.

I don't know what to make about of hipsters tinkering around like this, maybe it is tiny bubbles coming from the real man drowning deep inside them.

Re: Your laptop is infected with ransomware...
I have had to clean up a number of these ransomware infections, a few ideas. When these hit, they start encrypting data files pretty quick, so you must turn off the machine as soon as possible. You can safely boot the computer from a linux boot disk to copy off any data that is not backed up. If you...

Re: Anybody following VW's fuck up?
For decades car makers have gamed the mileage tests in a less blatant way. Cars are designed / tuned for good mileage on the EPA tests, which are the only mileage stats you can put in an ad, often at the expense of real world mileage. In reality nobody drives 55 mph like the test, so real mileage d...

I sent this as a PM, but it might be worth posting publicly: I have more than a few people very close to me w. autoimmune disorders. This may sound like a totally a-holish thing to say but, because it's IGX, I'll go ahead and say it - the psychological component and its role in inflammation and chr...

Re: Anybody following VW's fuck up?
Very very interesting stuff. VW has been tried and convicted in the media so they're fucked no matter what. Maybe I'm cynical but I pretty much expect this kind of thing. Re: Selling land
If your land was around here, I'd send you to one of my customers - three lawyers, I don't think it's actually a partnership but they share an office - but two do mainly real estate and the third is a CPA. They do enough real estate transactions that they'd have a good idea what the land is worth, a...

RealPlayer had a thing that let you download from Flash from YouTube etc., but I don't know if it still does. If you run Linux, there is a trick that isn't too hard but it takes a little dicking around to figure out. That might also work for MacOS. It is a little on the geek side. http://kb9rlw.blog...

Microsoft Office 2016
I haven't been much of a Microsoft fan over the years. Most of the new versions of Office just move everything around and don't really add anything that 95% of the world cares about. The last really helpful feature added was when Word started underlining your spelling errors in red, in Office95. Tha...

Re: Computer Nerdfaces: The veteran's administration still uses COBOL?
COBOL usually means old, legacy code on mainframe or midra ge platforms, which are generally more secure platforms - older, stable, mature, built around tight security. As mentioned sufficiently poor practices can make anything insecure. In government, it is probably ripe for replacement when money ...

You can go crazy worrying about this kind of thing but don't put too much faith in the inspection of the electrical that was done with your home inspection. If you pay a diligent electrician to spend a few hours opening boxes and checking the condition of the whole house you'd have a better idea. (U...
