Today I received yet ANOTHER email of someone who’s had a bad first experience at a Crossfit gym. On average I receive 2-5 emails a month from people who’ve attended a Crossfit gym for the first time and had a bad experience. This does not sound like a big number but keep in mind, I am one person and every bad experience with Crossfit should be taken seriously, especially when each one was preventable. Every negative experience is a huge blow to Crossfit because, by original design, Crossfit is an outstanding program in every facet.

The bottom line is if you do not have an introductory program for newbies or a method of scaling, everything else you do is void. All the promotions and call back procedures can go out the window if you are turning people off without knowing it. Yes, without knowing it. What I hear in email, you are not privy to in person. These people will often quit immediately or suck it up for a short period before they can’t take it anymore. And when the critics say “Crossfit is about natural selection,” they are somewhat right. Survival of the fittest? We should be more interested in setting up for success every person that walks through our doors.

Of every negative email I’ve received 94% refer to some aspect of the first workout whether it involves throwing newbies in with experienced athletes or failing to scale the workout. The other 6% of emails involve bad coaching that resulted in a negative experience, exasperation of an old injury or infliction of a new injury. Each of these stories involves people suffering needlessly to the end of their first workout or not finishing at all! According to sports experts perceived competency is one of the elements of success for coaching athletes. How competent does one feel if they can’t even finish the first workout?

When you see Crossfit online or TV, you see everything great…. people smiling, looking strong and proficient, and helping one another. In reality these things are built. It takes time, resources, smart coaching and smarter programming. Smart coaches know how to partition off newbies and ease them into the herd. Ease them into the herd, not cull the herd. Hell, even the military has an introductory program. It’s called bootcamp. Recruits are eased into military life, not shoved off to war.

This story happens all too often. Someone gets really excited about Crossfit but has their hopes dashed when they are thrown in the mix. And this scenario isn’t isolated to small unknown boxes. The email I received today referred to a large Crossfit box in New York City.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. - Helen Keller

If that unborn child isn't tough enough to withstand the repeated shocks of box jumps, then xfitters don't want it in their ranks.

The 2012 CrossFit Games Open is in the books, and I can officially check off my goal of competing in the Open while pregnant.
Even 7 months pregnant, I'm the 218th fittest woman in the North Central region. Not bad.

12.5 was last year's 11.6, so it was easy to compare how much the extra weight is holding me back. Last year, I did 11.6 twice
and got 89 reps the first time and 91 reps the second time. This year, I got 70 reps. My weight is around 150-153# now
(about 25-28# heavier than I was last year at this time), so not surprisingly, the chest to bar pull ups were tough. To put it
in pre-pregnancy perspective, my max weighted chest to bar pull up on August 1, 2011 was 28.5# ... basically my current body weight,
yikes!

I'm proud to say, CrossFit 515 represented very well in the Open! The team finished 6th in the North Central region and 46th worldwide.
Jaime Noyce (7th), Bobby Noyce (12th), and Bart Boyd (25th) qualified individually for regionals. And Shelley Noyce, my mom and reigning
Games champion in her age group, finished 3rd worldwide in the 55-59 year old master women division ... headed back to Cali! Let's hope
we have some more 515 athletes joining her. I'm excited to watch everyone train and prepare to dominate in Chicago this year!!!

Now that the Open is over, I think I need a new crossfitting while pregnant goal to set my sights on because, I'll admit, I'm getting sick
of being pregnant while working out. Not that there's much I'm scaling or not doing -- I still do things like rope climbs, handstand walk,
and got a new 3RM on overhead squats yesterday of 140# (prior 3RM was 135# and 1RM is 145#). But, especially after watching everyone at
CrossFit 515 crush the Open wods, I'm getting anxious to be able to train as hard as I want again and get back to being able to do everything
I used to do.

61 days left!
The chance of an accident or a mistake and the results of this type of behavior could be devastating leaving her with a life of regret but I guess
being the 218th fittest woman in the North Central region far outweighs anything that could happen.

That blog is interesting. There are a number of posts where when confronted with objections to her exercise routine or pre-natal/newborn health care ideas her response is YOU HAVE NO SCIENCE but when confronted with scientific objections to her exercise routine or pre-natal/newborn health care ideas her response is DOCTORS AND SCIENTISTS ARE STUPID. Is anyone surprised the idiot is against vaccines?

It is understandable when women do not want stereotypes about their gender to hold them back from pursuing careers, education, or balancing a family and work life in an equal manner with their marriage partner. But the belief that pregnant women need to be a bit more careful and not go 110% physically, the recommendation that they not try to act as if they could do everything they could when not pregnant, these are not based in stereotypes, they're physiological reality. You can do a lot of stuff. Whether it's ultimately best for the health of you and your baby is another thing.

If you are so worried about what's going to happen to your body if you don't treat your WODs like a war and do box jumps and kipping pull-ups and what-have-you that you decide you're going to blindly keep pushing yourself through your pregnancy no matter what, don't get pregnant. There are inescapable physiological sacrifices that you have to make when pregnant, that is not sexist or stereotyping, it is the very nature of pregnancy itself. You don't have to be pregnant. Nobody is forcing you.

This says much about the quality of their programming even ignoring it was done while preggars.

If those fucktards have some knowledge of training outside of Crossfit, they'd know how to rearrange things, or re-emphasize things, during pregnancy to continue to make progress w/o placing their baby at risk. Oh well. Stay tuned!

Sounds like she's more excited to get rid of an anchor rather than looking forward to the birth of a child.

Cave, that is correct.... I'm thinking by the time the kid is 5 he/she will have SLAP tears and torn achille's tendons and be running around shirtless at school saying "get some" a lot.

Look, I'm as pro-choice as they come, but even I admit a doctor should be involved at some point.

Alternatively:

Who are we to judge? If some cunt trophy-whore wants to be known for something more admirable than giving a killer blowjob to the nearest sales manager, so be it! Let her box jump and thruster until her unborn children spill from her uterus like so many Kamikaze shots from the newest 21 year old.

If she's the 218th fittest woman in the North Central region with a baby in her womb, then I'm the 734th Fastest Tooth Flosser and 234th Best Broccoli Eater in the New York metropolitan area.

So beat that.
