Giving, Taking, Matching

Post by nafod »

It's science that the best interaction approach is tit-for-tat when you have to repeatedly interact with others. From this paper, first three sentences:

"The theory of evolution is based on the struggle for life and the survival of the fittest. Yet cooperation is common between members of the same species and even between members of different species. WTF is up with that?"

OK, the third sentence is mine.

The take home:
However, the result of the tournament was that the highest average score was attained by the simplest of all strategies submitted: TIT FOR TAT. This strategy is simply one of cooperating on the first move and then doing whatever the other player did on the preceding move. Thus TIT FOR TAT is a strategy of cooperation based on reciprocity.
Don’t believe everything you think.

Nafod, thanks for the link and comment!

I think game theory is very interesting and highly applicable to winning. And the "tit-for-tat" strategy you mention seems like a great way to maximize your return.

But winning, or getting a fair-share, won't always silence the ego the way being kind does.

What I like about it (tit-for-tat) is your best play starts with assuming the best of everyone else, and if they come around, you forgive and forget immediately. No grudges. That that would be a winning strategy for everybody is heartwarming.
