Generally speaking, the fact that you have to learn lots of new stuff is good for the brain. I am in PA dealing with nursing homes and my father. Stimulating the brain/body connection,...learning new things all the time, and improving mobility is where it is at. The general conditioning, non specific principle of Crossfit is good. If you want to be good at a sport,....train specifically however.

Agree completely. The problem is that last sentence is diametrically opposed to their core of their training "philosophy."
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Anybody read the "Understanding CF" article? I found this interesting:

"We’ve come to see increased work capacity as the holy grail of performance improvement and all other common metrics like VO2 max, lactate threshold, body composition, and even strength and flexibility as being correlates—derivatives, even. We’d not trade improvements in any other fitness metric for a decrease in work capacity."[/youtube]

This sounds new, and stupid. Is there a link?

It was debated into the ground and came out in China a few months back here. Thanks for paying attention.

Check out them big pulls today. I'm almost impressed with hers considering she probably weighs about 105.

Well, that work capacity thing is important for generalists.

I think soldiers, LEOs, etc....generalists.

If you are a PL, Thrower, or OL, and doing XF, then you are stupid and hurting your total.

However, if you are a strongman, doing "Heavy Crossfit" metcons is going to bring up your game.

I sold my copy of RKC, but doesn't Pavel say to do the swings overhead?

I always thought people did them lower for either safety reasons or the weight was too heavy to get full-ROM.

Re: Glassman's self-vaunted Integrity.

Compare his photos of the "Russian" (head level) vs. the "American" (overhead) Swing. Then look at his chart: Range of Motion - "Russian" 3.25 feet/rep, "American" 6.5 feet/rep.

He would have us believe that the ROM of the "American" Swing is 2X that of the "Russian" Swing.

I don't like them overhead so much just because there's that weightless "float" period. If it's going that high it feels like it might as well be a snatch.

He uses similar skills to calculate his weight and BF%.

I agree.
Really?

I've always preferred going overhead. I feel you've got to work a lot harder, and get a lot more pop in your hips to do them. I would only do less ROM if I was warming up or it was too heavy.

"The CrossFit guys don't like anybody who uses any equipment that can be found outside a park or, I don't know, a petting zoo or cemetery, where tombstones can be used as impromptu pulling sleds.

And the assorted bodybuilders and powerlifters and strength athletes dislike the CrossFit people because, well, all that endurance and grace the CrossFit guys exhibit in their assorted Sally, Alice, and Shakira exercise routines makes them all jealous because those graceful guys might just qualify for a role in the next off-Broadway production of Guys and Dolls and by God, the bodybuilders and powerlifters and strength athletes know they can't do that! On the swing, I like overhead swings as a finisher, kind of opens me up.

I vary the hight of my swings, but lately, I kind of see where Twight is comming from, when he has his people pop it to eye level.

Besides the overhead part, I don't see much difference in their swing.

Besides, even many of us here, who went to the RKC, will have little variations in technique and intensaty, Couch once again has to go out of his way to let us know that he has something better.
