Re: The couch thread
I got to watch an Oly lifter go against an @fitter doing one of the named workouts. The Oly lifter's time was significantly better.

You are probably right...assuming an OLer is willing to put in the time to learn how to do double-unders and SLAPtear pullups.WildGorillaMan wrote:you all know what's going to happen, right? This competition was designed and is desired to be scored so that insect OLers can't win. The Triplet was tested by @Fers beforehand to figure out how to score it and weigh allotted points properly. Typical @F stacking the deck behavior.
Embarrased that even when they stack the deck they still get clobbered, this will all quietly dissapear. Anybody remember the arm-wrestling cert? Me neither.
HQ might as well start challenging sports' governing bodies to stake a wager on a balloon race around the world.
EDIT: Also, I fail to see how @Fers learning crappy OL form and buying bumpers does anything to advance the sport of OL in this country. OLers who are done with the sport and migrate to @F doesn't advance anything, and there is no evidence that I know of that involves an @Fer becoming a high-level OLer.
This is like saying the proliferation of really fat people now taking up (walking) marathons and buying running shoes advances the sport of long-distance running in this country. False.

Re: The couch thread
I think the idea behind @Fit somehow benefiting USAW is this:
1. @Fitters buy USAW memberships and lift in meets. $$$ for USAW to support real athletes. (this might work)
2. Teen @Fitters take up lifting, have potential to become decent lifters. (faulty: there are no teen @Fitters)
3. @Fit popularity means more people know what snatches are. Teens don't go into sports they've never heard of or seen performed. (faulty: no teen @Fitters)
I bet Burgener would zombie-stomp the competition if he can be bothered to show up. I'm not sure he counts for either side, though.

One Pat Mendes has done more for OL popularity in the last 6 months than any hundred @fitters. Because he totals more than any hundred of them put together.

Easy way of knowing if #1 works. There is now a USAW club under "Team @F" and Mike Burgener, it's been active for nearly a year and a half. Count the number of team members.tzg wrote:I think the idea behind @Fit somehow benefiting USAW is this:

Re: The couch thread
Besides that, there are 7 other USAW clubs with "@F" in their names. In all fairness to @F, I would venture to guess that's a good proportion of the clubs formed in the last 5 years (I don't think Team @F should count, since Mike's Gym has been a regional training center forever) and @F members may account for a good proportion of the new USAW members in the last 5 years.

Well, I have to say that the USAW officials and coaches I've spoken to seemed to be very excited about @fit's influence in getting more people involved in the sport. USAW is cash poor right now (stock market was NOT kind) and lacks a lot of athletes.
However, I coach with a few coaches were have been involved with CF at some level or another and they all have expressed disappointment in how badly @F wrecks their lifter's strength, causes injuries, etc. We had some national level competitors who didn't even rank well state-wide after doing @f for a year.
And, I really don't see this as anything other than @F's attempt to look "badass" to the rest of the world. ("Badass" is scientific term thrown around at cert. It means "it might kill you, but it looks COOL!) But, just like couch's accusations towards Everett and others, it is an example of @f riding the coattails of a great organization for personal glory.
USAW just wants to promote their sport, but they are in bed with a bottle of gin.
Whatever happened to the C2 certs/workshops? Did anyone ever figure out that it takes five minutes to figure out a C2 and a three hour cert is just plain stupid? Maybe there are multiple levels to the fishing game that I don't know about . . .

Re: The couch thread
There was a time when O lifting was popular. They got there when they emphasized putting really heavy weights overhead and not the angle of the metaplex over the zyphoid process on the downward stroke. I grew up with some real heroes on the platform, guys who were normal enough to actually want to be like. I had a great conversation with a former American great not long ago and now a big time strength coach and he and his buddies (the 1980s crew) said they "saw" the great transition from a strength sport to a fitness club (Average Joe's?).
In my opinion, O lifting has to go back to just a few weight classes and let people know who is in what place at a meet. Everyone gets a Gold Medal...I don't want to get started, but the demise of O lifting is when a first timer could show up and win. Hell, my first meets I was lifting more weight than a LOT of people and struggling to get fourth or fifth. I had to get in the mid 300s in the Clean and Jerk before they stopped making me load at meets.

Re: The couch thread
WESTSIDE did not put on competitions with CrossFit. They just had some @Fitters over for dinner and sold them monolifts. Their website does not mention @Fit. Same type of thing with Dave Tate. Whenever anybody drops by or lets them drop by, they leverage the opportunity very hard.CFB wrote:powerlifter54 wrote:=D> =D> =D> =D>syaigh wrote:WESTSIDE just wants to promote their sport, but they are in bed with a bottle of gin.

You know what, fuck it. WildGorillaMedia is going to sponsor a combined Olympic Lifting Meet/Poetry Slam.
Points will be equally awarded based on Total, Composition, Presentation, and Beret Angle. Knee socks during all three events will be a 3x points modifier.
