Jack, why are you insistent on exhonerating the AD and President and others? I would have taken you for someone who supports personal responsibility, not nefarious string-pullers.

Re: Louis Freeh report on Penn State & Sandusky
The AD, President, and others were not involved in the situation-- it wasn't reported to them directly, and they didn't witness what Sandusky did. Their failure was in aiding and abetting the coverup and failing to follow mandatory reporting requirements.BucketHead wrote:Jack, why are you insistent on exhonerating the AD and President and others? One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

http://articles.philly.com/2012-07-20/n ... -professorPennsylvania State University's board of trustees quickly stripped Graham B. Spanier of his presidency after the child sex-abuse case implicating Jerry Sandusky was outlined in excruciating detail in a grand jury presentment in November.
All it took was a simple vote by the trustees.
But whether to allow Spanier to remain a tenured faculty member in the university's College of Health and Human Development has proved much thornier.
Removing a tenured professor is no easy feat at Penn State or other universities, and can take months. In Spanier's case, the issue is further complicated because he acted as a president in the Sandusky case, not as a professor.

Just in case you thought that was bad:
According to an article in CenterDaily.com (July 18, 2012), Spanier is currently on sabbatical and has a national security job for the federal government.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_SpanierSpanier contributed to the publication of ten books and over 100 scholarly journal articles while a researcher. As a family sociologist, demographer, and marriage and family therapist, he was the founding editor of the Journal of Family Issues.

i am mystified by leadership's failures to act in 98 and 01. i think money and PSU politics was an issue but i think the academic ivory tower of not implicating somebody in something unless it was chrystal clear and proven, and an additional hands off approach due to the nature of the crimes were factors. Having delt with shitstorms of this level if not this widespread in the hot seat , the immediate actions to take were clear and while perhaps not an easy path or popular, they were easily predicatable as the best for the truth, the organization, and the most importantly the victims.
Even a suspension with pay would have worked. Or flat out saying Sandusky was not allowed in or near any facility at PSU until further notice. Easy to do and handle. But they didn't. Cowards.
They all should be horse whipped. The buggerer and those who facilitated it equally.

I think you overestimate the degree to which university presidents and other administrators are really part of the academic community, and underestimate how concerned they are with money. Yes, they were once academics and they occasionally return to academia, but they spend more time on fundraising than anything else.powerlifter54 wrote:BucketHead wrote:Jack, why are you insistent on exhonerating the AD and President and others? Apparently the NCAA is gonna slap Penn State hard some time this week....
"Know that! & Know it deep you fucking loser!"

Two coworkers were just talking about this. It's a huge deal around here because there's tons of fans and alumni here. 60 million dollar fine, championships taken away, no telecasts of games well into the foreseeable future.protobuilder wrote:Apparently the NCAA is gonna slap Penn State hard some time this week....
They didn't slap them, they straight up gave them a curb bite.

They deserve it. This is up there with the death penalty.Dr. Agkistrodon wrote:

I speak from experience: this punishment is not nearly enough for the victims.Dr. Agkistrodon wrote:Two coworkers were just talking about this. Being molested as a young man leaves an indelible mark upon you. It's something you carry with you for the rest of your life, struggle to come to terms with, and it impacts every relationship and friendship you might possibly try to have in your life.

I agree with you 100% on this point. It's almost like no matter what punishment you mete out against the organization, it wont undo the damage suffered by those who really matter- the victims.
I have believed for a long time in the death penalty for rapists and child molesters, partly because of how high the rate of recidivism is. And because at least the victims can rest knowing that the person who victimized them is no longer in circulation.
I think the hope is that in this case the school will be forced to de-emphasize their program, because many people believe that this was well-known by folks at the school and he was allowed to pretty-much do whatever he wanted because the team was bringing in a lot of money. Add THAT notion on top of the abuse the victims suffered and you have a recipe for a severely distorted and bleak world view. I honestly do feel for the victims. It is a damn shame, the whole miserable fucking thing.
Re: Louis Freeh report on Penn State & Sandusky
Bob you're completely correct. Believe me.
No punishment is enough for this but what it does do, as others said, is deemphasize the football program and with the 20 scholarships lost per year it will have a crippling effect on them for years to come.
PSU football will never be the same and it's well deserved.
The victims are the true losers here because no amount of money or university sanctions can replace what was taken from them and what they have to deal with.

Public institutions don't get the same punishment as private ones. Kids are of distant secondary concern. That said no punishment could really atoneBobW wrote:

This is worse than a one-year death penalty. The program is not coming back from this.
Hey, JoPa is the 12th all time winning coach. A few more years and he is back in the top 10.

It's as if those boys were never raped. Kudos, NCAA. Now PSU can get back to building a university the football program can be proud of.
